{"id":2836,"date":"2012-09-20T10:36:20","date_gmt":"2012-09-20T10:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/?p=2836"},"modified":"2018-07-19T20:23:49","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T20:23:49","slug":"our-golden-calves-a-correction-to-more-thoughts-on-disappearing-mothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2012\/09\/our-golden-calves-a-correction-to-more-thoughts-on-disappearing-mothers.html","title":{"rendered":"Our Golden Calves: A Correction to &#8220;More Thoughts on Disappearing Mothers&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fellow saints and sinners, none of you pointed this out (rather surprisingly), but it occurred to me this morning that I had originally written <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2012\/09\/more-thoughts-on-disappearing-mothers.html\">this<\/a>: &#8220;The Bible and my Reformed tradition have taught me that we human beings are capable of making idols out of just about anything, children included- maybe most especially our children&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what I was thinking when I wrote it- I probably wasn&#8217;t thinking!- but that last clause, &#8220;maybe most especially our children,&#8221; is now gone.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, if I had to choose one cardinal idol that deserves a &#8220;most especially&#8221; before it in Scripture, it would be money and greed, mainly because of the hard things Jesus has to say about wealth.<\/p>\n<p>But, this, too, like many things here at this intersection between life and God, is up for discussion.
