{"id":2421,"date":"2012-07-16T10:31:57","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T10:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/?p=2421"},"modified":"2018-07-20T18:52:41","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T18:52:41","slug":"2421","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2012\/07\/2421.html","title":{"rendered":"Chicken Living Versus Freedom?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend our family&#8217;s Friday movie night featured <em>Chicken Run,\u00a0<\/em>an animated comedy directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park which tells the story of one group of cooped-up chickens and their relentless thirst for freedom from their soulless, money-grubbing overlords, the Tweedys. \u00a0The chickens&#8217; ringleader is Ginger, an independent, no-nonsense hen constantly hatching (pun intended) often ludicrous plans for escape.<\/p>\n<p>At one point in the movie, after numerous foiled attempts at freedom from the barbed wire boredom and merciless tedium of an existence devoted to nothing but the sheer production of eggs and more eggs, the hens begin to give up hope of ever escaping. \u00a0The following scene shows Ginger trying to rouse her friends from their despair.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger:<\/em> <em>Think, everyone, think. What haven&#8217;t we tried yet?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hen 1: We haven&#8217;t tried not trying to escape.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hen 2: Hmm. That might work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: What about Edwina? \u00a0[Edwina was axed after failing to produce eggs.]\u00a0How many more empty nests will it take?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hen 3: It wouldn&#8217;t be empty if she&#8217;d spent more time laying,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hen 4: And less time escaping.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: So, laying eggs all your life,\u00a0then getting plucked and roasted is good enough for you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hen: It&#8217;s a living.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: The problem is the fences aren&#8217;t just round the farm,\u00a0they&#8217;re up here in your heads. \u00a0<\/em><em>There is a better place out there. \u00a0Somewhere beyond that hill. \u00a0It has wide-open spaces and lots of trees. And grass.\u00a0Can you imagine that? \u00a0Cool, green grass.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hens: Who feeds us?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: We feed ourselves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hens: Where&#8217;s the farm?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: There is no farm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hens: Where does the farmer live?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: There is no farmer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hens: Is he on holiday?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ginger: He isn&#8217;t anywhere.
