{"id":1667,"date":"2012-04-05T10:57:43","date_gmt":"2012-04-05T10:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/?p=1667"},"modified":"2018-07-20T20:34:02","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T20:34:02","slug":"in-the-name-of-love-station-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2012\/04\/in-the-name-of-love-station-4.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;In the Name of Love&#8221;- Station 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>So they arrested Jesus, took him off, and brought him into the high priest&#8217;s house&#8230;The men who were holding Jesus began to make fun of him and knock him about. \u00a0They blindfolded him. &#8220;Prophesy!,&#8221; they told him. &#8220;Who is it that&#8217;s hitting you?&#8221; \u00a0And they said many other scandalous things to him. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When the day broke, the official assembly of the people, the chief priests and the scribes came together, and they took him off to their council. &#8220;If you are the Messiah,&#8221; they said, &#8220;tell us.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If I tell you,&#8221; he said to them, &#8220;you won&#8217;t believe me. \u00a0And if I ask you a question, you won&#8217;t answer me. \u00a0But from now on the son of man will be seated at the right hand of God&#8217;s power.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So you&#8217;re the son of God, are you?,&#8221; they said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You say that I am,&#8221; he said to them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Why do we need any more witnesses?,&#8221; they said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve heard it ourselves, from his own mouth!&#8221;-Luke 22: 54, 63-71<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The chief priests and the \u00a0scribes knew about God&#8217;s truth and justice&#8211; so much so that they saw themselves as mediators of that truth and justice for the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s dangerous hubris to set ourselves up to be God&#8217;s mouthpiece. \u00a0We end up putting things into God&#8217;s mouth that God never actually said. \u00a0We end up twisting truth and justice into pale, diabolical versions of themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s this kind of thing that can cause even the best of people to mislead themselves into thinking that torture in the name of justice- be it &#8220;just war&#8221; or the pursuit of truth- is not only okay but commendable. \u00a0Maybe this explains the fact that our nation of America, which still describes itself overwhelmingly as &#8220;Christian,&#8221; could condone the practice of water boarding in its interrogation methods. \u00a0When we think God is on our side, we can get away with rationalizing a whole lot of things.<\/p>\n<p>The good news in all of this is that Jesus thankfully doesn&#8217;t allow Himself to be coerced. \u00a0God&#8217;s living, breathing, walking Justice- God&#8217;s &#8220;Truth&#8221;- is also very much in full ownership of Himself. \u00a0He won&#8217;t let us<em> actually<\/em> define who He is, even as He won&#8217;t force Himself on us. \u00a0He won&#8217;t let us torture Him into unconditional submission, even as He lets us breathe threats down His neck, taunt Him and eventually crucify Him.<\/p>\n<p>Love Itself requires this of Jesus. \u00a0Love and Love alone- not the handcuffs we place on Jesus- is what ultimately binds Him to the cross.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with my love for 80&#8217;s music, here&#8217;s U2 live in 1984 singing &#8220;In the Name of Love.&#8221; Bono&#8217;s hair style is itself worth a peek:\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rare U2 Pride In The Name Of Love Live 1984\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r8Pnlhs7grQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So they arrested Jesus, took him off, and brought him into the high priest&#8217;s house&#8230;The men who were holding Jesus began to make fun of him and knock him about. \u00a0They blindfolded him. &#8220;Prophesy!,&#8221; they told him. &#8220;Who is it that&#8217;s hitting you?&#8221; \u00a0And they said many other scandalous things to him. \u00a0 When the&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":461,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[58,25,14],"tags":[571,573,561,575,576,570,566],"class_list":["post-1667","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cross","category-jesus","category-love","tag-final-week-of-lent","tag-guantanamo-bay","tag-holy-week","tag-holy-week-quotes","tag-inspirational-quotes-about-love","tag-maundy-thursday","tag-stations-of-the-cross"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
