{"id":136,"date":"2011-10-12T23:11:41","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T23:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/?p=136"},"modified":"2011-10-13T00:27:27","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T00:27:27","slug":"what-if-god-was-one-of-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2011\/10\/what-if-god-was-one-of-us.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;What If God Was One of Us?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard this song sung by Alanis Morisette the other day on the radio. \u00a0It&#8217;s actually a wonderful reflection on the doctrine that makes Christianity so distinctive- the notion that in Jesus Christ God became &#8220;one of us,&#8221; laying aside God&#8217;s claims to divinity in order to be with us. \u00a0We use a fancy name for it, but the &#8220;Incarnation&#8221; could just as well be about God becoming a &#8220;slob like one of us,&#8221; as Morisette croons.<\/p>\n<p>Which at its heart is a declaration of how much God really loves us. \u00a0Scandalous, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0But in a really beautiful, life-giving way.
