It\u2019s funny with heart to spare.\u00a0<\/span>Recommended.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78078\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78077\">5 Questions for: Producer Tom Rice\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78081\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78080\">Tom Rice has previously produced the Sundance hit<\/span>\u00a0<em>The Way, Way Back<\/em> (starring Steve Carell)<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78087\">, as well as the Academy Award-nominated live-action short<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><em><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78083\">Kavi<\/span><\/em>. Other credits include <em><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78135\">Mississippi Grind<\/span><\/em> (starring Ryan Reynolds) and his just-completed production of\u00a0<em>Speech &amp; Debate<\/em><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78085\">\u00a0(based on Stephen Karam\u2019s hit play).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78121\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>JWK:<\/strong> <strong>What attracted to you to\u00a0<em>The Hollars<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78101\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>TOM RICE:<\/strong>\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78100\">Well, I read the script on an airplane headed back to Los Angeles from Jackson, Mississippi, where I\u2019m from and where my family still lives. I was laughing out loud and crying at the same time\u2026And that\u2019s always a good sign \u2014 when you\u2019re reading something and your body is involuntarily reacting like that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78124\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78138\">I\u2019m drawn to stories that have some semblance of redemption, reconciliation or social justice\u2026I like making movies that are touching and show that we\u2019re all in this together and we\u2019ll get through it. Those kinds of stories are what I respond to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78141\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78140\">And on a personal \u00a0level, a year before reading this script, I went through a similar (diagnosis as faced by Margo Martindale in\u00a0<\/span>The Hollars<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78143\">) with my dad. So, it really struck a special chord with me. And while it was something that I had gone through myself &#8212; I also had a more universal connection to it. The family dynamic \u2014 the highs and the lows \u2014 is all just so relatable. It\u2019s humorous in the right places and touching in the right places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78146\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78145\"><strong>JWK:<\/strong> <strong>How important are you own faith values in choosing the projects you go forward with?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78149\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>TR:<\/strong>\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78148\">Well, my own faith values are the core of who I am. Every ounce of my world view \u2014 through that faith lens \u2014 is what I use when choosing a story, when making a film. You can\u2019t get away from that. When something is the core of who you are, it\u2019s going to permeate into everything you do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78152\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78151\">A lot of people ask me \u201cAre you a Christian filmmaker?\u201d No, I\u2019m not a Christian filmmaker. I\u2019m a man of faith who goes to work each day and I do the best job I can. I\u2019m not a Christian filmmaker any more than a man of faith is a Christian bartender or a Christian waiter or a Christian lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78155\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78154\">There is something unique to this industry in that we have the ability to tell stories \u2014 but all truth is God\u2019s truth. If I tell a story \u2014 and I\u2019m telling it truthfully \u2014 Christians will know where to find God in it. I don\u2019t think that a film has to be over-the-top Evangelical in order for Christians to appreciate it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78158\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78157\">I also don\u2019t make movies just for Christians. I make movies that I hope will have a positive impact on everyone who sees it\u2026 I think that God can work through the very overt Christian movies and I feel that there\u2019s a place for those. But I also think my gift is making films that are more subtle. I\u2019m not at all interested in preaching to the choir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78162\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78221\">The goal of\u00a0<\/span><em>The Hollars<\/em><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78161\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>is not to convert people to Christianity by any means. The goal is for both the faith-based and non faith-based audience\u2026to leave the theater and go \u201cI need to call my mom\u201d (or) \u201cI need to reconnect with my brother\u201d (or) \u201cThere\u2019s something in my life that I need to fix.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78219\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78218\">God is still in that too. God is not just in altar calls at the end of movies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78164\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78208\"><strong>JWK:<\/strong> <strong>How did you land Josh Groban for the role of the pastor?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78204\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78216\">TR:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78206\">Josh had done a couple of episodes of\u00a0<\/span><em>The Office<\/em>. John Krasinski was a star of<em>\u00a0The Office<\/em><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78203\">\u00a0and directed a couple of episodes\u2026Josh was in one of the episodes that he directed. So, we had a discussion about who to put in that role. A few names came up and, when Josh Groban was added to the list, John fell in love with the idea. Josh loved John, and the script, and he was in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78201\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78200\"><strong>JWK: Speaking of John Krasinski, he both acts in and directs\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><em>The Hollars<\/em>. How did that come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78198\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>TR:\u00a0<\/strong><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78210\">John was attached to act in it with Margo Martindale and Richard Jenkins. That iteration never came to be, but it was just one of those scripts that never left John\u2019s mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78194\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78196\">So\u2026time passed and John still wanted to do it. So, he struck a deal with the original producer, got the rights to the script, and then decided that he wanted to direct it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78192\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78191\"><strong>JWK:<\/strong> <strong>Margo Martindale from<em> Justified<\/em> gives a particularly powerful performance in the film. How did she end up coming aboard?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78187\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>TR:<\/strong>\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78189\">The part was written for her. She was part of the original team in the previous incarnation so when it came back around, there was just nobody else to consider because she\u2019s so brilliant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78213\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78212\"><strong>JWK:<\/strong> <strong>Bonus question. What do you hope people take from this movie?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>TR<\/strong>:\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1474462915911_78182\">I hope people see themselves and their families in this movie. I hope it inspires people to forgive and redeem.
