Lewis\u2019 <em>The Great Divorce <\/em>and <em>The Screwtape Letters<\/em>, the original production <em>Martin Luther on Trial<\/em> and the world premiere of the one-man show<em> C.S. Lewis Onstage<\/em> starring FPA Founder and Artistic Director Max McLean.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Details about the productions follow my conversation with McLean.<\/p>\n<p><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2103\">JWK:<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2103\"> Can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you came to found\u00a0Fellowship for Performing Arts?<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2000\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_1999\"><strong>MAX McLEAN:<\/strong> \u200b Fellowship for Performing Art&#8217;s mission is to produce theatre from a Christian worldview that engages a diverse audience.\u00a0 We do that by carefully selecting material that, we think, has the ability to reach across the cultural spectrum. Then we execute it to the highest levels that our budgets can afford. Finally we ask people to help us do it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why we are called Fellowship\u00a0for\u00a0Performing Arts. It&#8217;s a fellowship of people who believe that art and theatre from a Christian worldview can engage the moral imagination.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2004\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2003\">As to FPA&#8217;s beginning, I was already a theatre artist before I converted to Christianity.\u00a0 My imagination was captured. \u00a0\u200bI wanted to know more of it and see if I could integrate my faith into my work.\u00a0 In order to do that at the level of excellence I wanted, I had to raise funds.\u00a0 So we incorporated as a non-profit theater company.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2009\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2112\" dir=\"ltr\"><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2008\" dir=\"ltr\"><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2006\">JWK:<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2006\"> Why is theater from a Christian worldview important?<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2011\">\n<div>\u200b<\/div>\n<div><strong>MM:<\/strong> As an artist my work is almost exclusively the result of the thoughts I think, the books I read and the people\u200b I talk with.\u00a0 My faith is deeply embedded in my imaginative thought. Lewis had a lot to do with that.\u00a0 In my experience, if one begins \u200bwith challenges that are my chief preoccupation<\/div>\n<div>\u200bat the moment, \u200bone is often surprised at the way this shaft goes home to others.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2116\">Secondly, theatre offers a compelling way to get people&#8217;s mind away from contentious social issues and bring them down to brass tacks &#8211; to that whole network of spite, greed, envy, unfairness and conceit in our lives that really causes turmoil. Theatre can look at things like that in a deep way.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2016\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2118\" dir=\"ltr\"><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/div>\n<div><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2013\">JWK:<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2013\"> You&#8217;re kicking off this season with C.S. Lewis&#8217;\u00a0<em>The Great Divorce<\/em>, with previews beginning\u00a0Nov. 13, 2015,\u00a0followed by\u00a0<em>The Screwtape Letters<\/em>\u00a0in January. In special engagements during December and February you yourself are portraying Lewis in a one-man show called\u00a0<em>C.S. Lewis Onstage: The Most Reluctant Convert<\/em>. Why the fascination with Lewis and why do you think his work resonates so much with Christians in particular?<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>MM:<\/strong> No writer has captured my imagination more than C. S. Lewis. He helps me to makes sense of the world. Having a successful 40 year scholarly career in the rather hostile academic environments of Oxford &amp; Cambridge\u00a0while being an outspoken, devout Christian\u00a0makes him \u200ban \u200bextraordinary role model.\u00a0 He teaches me how &#8216;to steal past the watchful dragons&#8217; of prejudice and\u00a0preconceived\u00a0notions that immediately rear their head when<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2019\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2126\" dir=\"ltr\">\u200bthe Christian worldview is expressed. Lewis understood the challenge. He had to overcome his own hostility to Christianity which wasparticularly deep prior to his conversion. He remembered what it was like live in unbelief. His writings reflect that.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2124\">JWK<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2124\">:<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2124\"> In February, you&#8217;re presenting an original production called<em>\u00a0Martin Luther on Trial<\/em>,\u00a0which you wrote with Chris Cragin-Day. Can you tell me something about that and the point of view it takes on Martin Luther?<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>MM:<\/strong><i> Martin L<\/i><i>uther on Trial<\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i>examines Luther\u2019s legacy in the light of the 500<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the Reformation. \u200bLucifer is the prosecuting attorney, Luther\u2019s wife Kate acts for the defense, St. Peter is on the bench. The called witnesses are Hitler, Freud, \u200bHans Luther, Rabbi Yosel and Martin Luther King\u200b, Jr. We \u200bhave\u00a0Pope Francis making\u200b an appearance in our play.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a risky endeavor but we have\u00a0a \u200bdevelopment\u00a0process of readings, labs, workshops to make sure it is ready.This will be a development production.\u00a0 It will not be open for review.\u00a0 We plan to bring it back in the fall. \u200b<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2134\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2140\" dir=\"ltr\">My reason for commissioning this play is \u200bto look at\u200b \u200bthe inherent scandal of a divided Christianity. All\u00a0Christians should be humble and charitable about the events that led to the Protestant Reformation or Revolt (depending on your point of view).\u00a0If we can\u2019t humble ourselves who can? Theatre is a good place for an audience of Protestants, Catholics and those of other beliefs \u200bto explore and dialogue about \u200bthis\u200b controversial subject.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2138\">JWK<\/b><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2138\">:<\/b><i id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2139\"><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2138\">\u00a0<\/b><\/i><b id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2138\"> Faith-themes, at least those from a Christian perspective, seem to be having a hard time on Broadway.\u00a0<em>Amazing Grace,<\/em> for instance, is closing on\u00a0Oct. 25.\u00a0 Any thoughts on that?<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445410215134_2144\">\u200b<\/div>\n<div><strong>MM:<\/strong> Perhaps.
