The Bible Continues<\/em> off to a solid start in the ratings<\/a>, few would dispute that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/2015\/04\/mark-burnett-and-roma-downey-talk-about-bringing-a-d-to-tv-this-easter-sunday.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Burnett and Roma Downey<\/a> are at the head of the list of media innovators who, in various ways, are helping bring faith-fueled content and messages to the world. But there are others who deserve recognition who you may not have heard of. Here are eight of them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Charley Humbard (President and CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uptv.com\/\">UP TV<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> The son of famed televangelist Rex Humbard founded the Gospel Music Channel in 2004 and rebranded it as UP TV in 2013. The savvy executive is steadily building a slate of programming that reflect and promote the values of his Christian faith while being accessible to a broad audience as, per the network&#8217;s slogan, <em>Uplifting Entertainment<\/em>.\u00a0 While the network carries its share of classic shows (i.e. <em>Dr. Quinn, Growing Pains, Touched by an Angel<\/em>) it has quickly become a major provider of original content, including weekly TV movies, reality shows (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/2014\/12\/the-unbroken-power-of-forgiveness-tv-review-bringing-up-bates.html#\">Bringing Up Bates<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/2015\/03\/coming-attractions-holderness-family-on-tv-brothers-keepers-and-war-room-in-theaters.html\">The Holderness Family<\/a><\/em>) and scripted fare. The family drama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uptv.com\/heartland\/about\"><em>Heartland<\/em><\/a> (a Canadian import) premieres its eighth season tonight (4\/8) and <em>Ties That Bind<\/em>, a scripted drama produced especially for UP, is planned for this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a network promo for <em>The Music in Me<\/em> <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_39165\">an uplifting (there&#8217;s that word again) musical drama about a small town girl who had given up her dreams of musically performing only to rediscover her joy of singing\/songwriting as an adult through her work with a failing church choir.\u00a0 The film, which stars singer\/songwriter <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_39163\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_39170\" class=\"yiv9958182427bodytext21\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_39169\">Debbie Gibson <\/span><\/span>and <em>E.R<\/em>.&#8217;s Gloria Reuben (E.R.\u201d), will premiere this Sunday (4\/12) at 8:00 PM (ET). I&#8217;ll be posting a review later this week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Music In Me (Starring Debbie Gibson)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P6tHwESBFPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Margaret &#8220;Peggy&#8221; Kim (Founder, <a href=\"http:\/\/istand.tv\/\">iStandtv<\/a>) &#8211; <\/strong>The multi-award winning (including a Peabody) former History Channel exec is currently at work building iStandtv, an online TV streaming network aimed at bringing hip video content to young adults whose values aren&#8217;t particularly served by MTV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Terrence Lovett (Founder and CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianlibraryondemand.com\/\">Christian Library on Demand<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianlibraryondemand.com\/enlive-on-connected-tv\">EnLive TV<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> Lovett, a military veteran, launched his global Christian entertainment streaming video company as a means of utilizing emerging mobile and smart TV technologies to distribute Christian and family friendly content around the world. Lovett says he has created a Christian marketplace to access Christian and values-based consumers and is now actively seeking new content and program sponsors to build on his distribution system.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian Library on Demand (CLD) streaming content is available through the Apple, Google and Amazon.com App Stores. Development\/CFO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibleliteracy.org\/\">Bible Literacy Project<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> Believing that ignorance of the Bible amounts to cultural illiteracy, Scurry co-founded the non-profit, non-partisan Bible Literacy Project with Chuck Stetson in 2001 to encourage and facilitate the academic study of the Bible in public schools. The group&#8217;s funding comes organizations such as the John Templeton Foundation, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, and the William H. Flowers Foundation, as well as individual donors. In 2005, the Bible Literacy Project published <i><i>The Bible and Its Influence <\/i><\/i>which<i><i>, <\/i><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibleliteracy.org\/Site\/Case\/index.htm\">according to the group&#8217;s website<\/a>, is\u00a0the first student textbook for academic study of the Bible in public high schools. Since its publication, the program (created for high school students in grades 9-12) has gained national recognition for its scholarly approach to teaching about the Bible in compliance with First Amendment guidelines. <i>The Bible and Its Influence<\/i> can be taught as an English, social studies, or humanities elective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Chris Stone (CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithdrivenconsumer.com\/\">Faith Driven Consumer<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> Brand strategist Chris Stone founded <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1427981419582_35644\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50766\">Faith Driven Consumer as a means of connecting Christian consumers with companies that are relatively compatible with a Biblical worldview. Likewise, the organization helps companies &#8212; including media companies &#8212; reach out to faith-motivated American consumers. That group is estimated to include about 41 million strong adults (about 17 percent of the U.S. population) who spend around $2 trillion annually. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50756\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50751\">Faith Driven Consumer has earned recognition for rating Hollywood films and other entertainment offerings based on predictions regarding how well they will resonate with faith-driven audiences. The group&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithdrivenconsumer.com\/faith_friendly_film_reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Faith-Friendly Film Review<\/a> system serves as a key resource for consumers and the media to evaluate entertainment choices. For example, t<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50755\">he organization recently awarded the National Geographic\/Scott Free Productions television movie <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50844\">Killing Jesus\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithdrivenconsumer.com\/killing_jesus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">3 out of 5 stars<\/a> for faith compatibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50857\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50838\">This past week, the group gave a rating of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithdrivenconsumer.com\/a_d_the_series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">4.5 out of 5 stars<\/a> to the first episode of new NBC series <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50846\">A.D.<\/em> <em>The Bible<\/em> <em>Continues<\/em>, which details the events recorded in the four Gospels and the Book of Acts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50838\">In a statement about the show, Stone said <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50852\">\u201cWe believe <em>A.D.<\/em> is going to be a mega-hit; it has the potential to be the most successful faith-based TV franchise in history. Like the celebrated box office blockbuster THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST a decade ago, <em>A.D.<\/em> combines one of history\u2019s greatest stories with superb writing and excellent production values. <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50855\">We\u2019ve watched Hollywood struggle to reach the coveted faith audience with projects like <em>Noah<\/em> and <em>Exodus<\/em> that failed to resonate, and maintained all along that the \u2018magic formula\u2019 to reach us is straightforward\u2014tell the story in a way that is consistent with the biblical narrative and message and give it the highest production value possible. <em>A.D.<\/em><\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50855\"> will prove this point, and NBC will reap the rewards for<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50855\"> respecting the audience and getting it right. <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50860\">We also believe that this series will resonate with non-faith audiences. The story is so gripping and compelling that people of all backgrounds will want to tune in just to see what happens next.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428477383440_50855\">And, indeed, as noted above, NBC does appear to have a hit on its hands with <em>A.D., <\/em>suggesting that Stone knows what he&#8217;s talking about.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428498337008_5357\">6. William Vanderbloemen (President\/CEO<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanderbloemen.com\/\">Vanderbloemen Search Group<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> With prior experience as both a pastor and a human resources manager, Vanderbloeman founded to be a hub connecting churches and faith-based organizations (including media companies) with talented and experienced staffers that share their core spiritual values. He is the author of <em id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1428498337008_5362\">Pastoral Succession That Works <\/em>(Baker Books, 2014) and considered one of the leading\u00a0experts on the issue of pastoral \u201csuccession planning\u201d for churches and ministries.\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1427981419582_35644\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Eduardo Ver\u00e1stegui (Co-Founder, Metanoia Films) &#8211; <\/strong>The Mexican actor\/singer was building a successful secular career when he decided to devote his creative talents to putting forth stories of hope and faith.\u00a0 That led to his co-founding of Metanoia Films which, in 2006, produced <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bella_%28film%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Bella<\/em><\/a>, a pro-life drama starring\u00a0Ver\u00e1stegui that won the People&#8217;s Choice Award at that year&#8217;s <a title=\"Toronto International Film Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto_International_Film_Festival\">Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>. It also picked up <sup id=\"cite_ref-Bella_is_a_Rallying_Point_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>the <a title=\"Heartland Film Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heartland_Film_Festival\">Heartland Film Festival<\/a>&#8216;s Grand Prize Award Winner for Best Dramatic Feature the <a title=\"Smithsonian Institution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smithsonian_Institution\">Smithsonian Institution<\/a>&#8216;s Legacy Award for the film&#8217;s positive contribution to Latino art and culture.<\/p>\n<p>On April 24th, Metanoia Films, in association with Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, will release<em> Little Boy<\/em> in theaters. I&#8217;ve seen it and though my official review is yet to come, I can tell you now that the World War II-era story a boy&#8217;s prayers for the safety of this soldier father is masterful filmmaking.\u00a0Ver\u00e1stegui shaved his head for his supporting role as a priest in the film which stars his friend Kevin James, along with Emily Watson, David Henrie, Michael Rapaport, Ted Levine, Tom Wilkinson, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and, in the title role, Jakob Salvati.\u00a0 Catch the trailer below.
