The tide is turning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>People in the News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/movies\/article\/mel-gibsons-beaver-opening-no-21m-indie-film-cant-save-his-career-27180\"><em>The Beaver<\/em> bombs.<\/a> <\/strong>Mel Gibson&#8217;s comeback vehicle tanked at the weekend box office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiesenthal.com\/site\/apps\/nlnet\/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&amp;b=4441467&amp;ct=9379943\"><strong>Tom Cruise honored by Simon Wiesenthal Center.<\/strong><\/a> The Jewish group bestowed its Humanitarian Award on the actor for his work in support of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumoftolerance.com\/site\/c.tmL6KfNVLtH\/b.4865925\/k.83A7\/Whats_Happening_at_the_MOT.htm\">Museum of Tolerance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Network Upfronts: NBC has found its Voice but can it find new hits in the fall? <\/strong>Next week is the week when the five broadcast networks announce their fall schedules. NBC starts things off next Monday (May 16). Fox will also be chiming in on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>The perennially struggling Peacock Network (which has fallen a long way from its &#8220;Must-See TV&#8221; day) recently turned up a much needed hit with the singing competition show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/tv\/article\/how-nbc-found-its-voice-now-can-it-revive-primetime-27167\"><em>The Voice<\/em><\/a>. But is it a flash in the pan for the network or its news <em>A-Team <\/em>(the show that sparked NBC&#8217;s golden era of hits in the 1980&#8217;s, also after years of bottom-feeding ratings).<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned (or not). In the meantime, here&#8217;s a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/tv\/article\/fall-tv-pilots-nbc-2011\">NBC&#8217;s pilots<\/a>. Some of the titles are tentative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefutoncritic.com\/devwatch.aspx?series=&amp;network=nbc&amp;daycode=2&amp;statuscode=1&amp;genre=drama&amp;studio=\"><strong>Dramas<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>A. Mann&#8217;s World<br \/>\n<\/em>Don Johnson is a Hollywood hair stylist named Alan Mann in a drama  that examines one man&#8217;s struggle to remain relevant in an ever-changing  culture.<\/p>\n<p><em>Grimm<\/em><br \/>\nA dark crime drama with characters inspired by Grimm&#8217;s fairy tales.<\/p>\n<p><em>Metro<\/em><br \/>\nJimmy Smits (<em>LA Law, NYPD Blue<\/em>) is the mayor of Los Angeles in a drama said to have <em>Traffic<\/em>-like overtones. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Playboy Club<br \/>\n<\/em>A sexy soap set in a Chicago Playboy Club in the 1960&#8217;s that\u00a0 <em>&#8220;explores the lives of working-class  Playboy bunnies and the men who loved them.&#8221; <\/em>The fact that actors (and, of course, actresses) in the show are being asked to sign contracts with nudity clauses has set off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrc.org\/bozellcolumns\/columns\/2011\/20110411041653.aspx\">alarm bells at the conservative Media Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Prime Suspect<\/em><br \/>\nAn American adaptation of the British series about a tough female police detective.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reconstruction<\/em><br \/>\nA post-Civil War western about a Civil War vet and his attempt to start a new life in <em>&#8220;a complicated town where he is welcomed as its savior &#8212; whether he likes it or not.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REM<br \/>\n<\/em>An <em>Inception<\/em>-esque thriller about a cop living two different realities. <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>17th Precinct<br \/>\n<\/em>Excelsior P.D. (which, BTW, would be a better title) solves crimes in a city where <em>&#8220;magic and supernatural elements rule over science.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smash<br \/>\n<\/em>Will Steven Spielberg&#8217;s musical drama about a Broadway show live up to its title? Debra Messing (<em>Will &amp; Grace<\/em>)<em>, <\/em>Katherine McPhee (<em>American Idol<\/em>) and Anjelica Huston star. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wonder Woman<\/em><br \/>\nDavid E.
