In a fictionalized saga revealed to the audience through flashback, he learns that his estranged dying father knew Escriv\u00e1 as a young man &#8212; and of the strikingly different paths their lives took during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930&#8217;s.\u00a0 Their diverging and, ironically, converging journeys serve both to tell a story of a Catholic Church literally under fire and as a parable on the healing power of forgiveness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This excellent movie, especially when considered alongside the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2011\/02\/of-gods-and-men.html\"><em>Of Gods and Men<\/em><\/a>, suggests that films offering positive views of religious faith (and even the Catholic Church) are making a bit of a comeback in the movie industry.\u00a0 If nothing else, <em>There Be Dragons<\/em> serves up a far less sinister view of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opusdei.us\/\">Opus Dei<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opus_Dei\">Latin for &#8220;Work of God&#8221;<\/a>) than, say, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0382625\/\"><em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 I can tell you that the English-language movie is masterfully written and directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0423646\/\">Roland Joff\u00e9<\/a> and features strong performances all around, particularly by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1214435\/\">Charlie Cox<\/a> (as the real-life <em>Escriv\u00e1<\/em>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004747\/\">Wes Bentley<\/a> (as his fictional friend\/antagonist Manolo).<\/p>\n<p>As for the film&#8217;s accuracy, I decided to seek the perspective of Brian Finnerty, the U.S. media relations director for Opus Dei.\u00a0 Like me, he liked the movie but, unlike me, he brought a wealth of knowledge and understanding about its subject to the viewing of it.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>To Finnerty the movie is <em>&#8220;a wonderful reminder that the Church is blessed with many good and holy priests.&#8221;<\/em> He is particularly pleased at the timing of its release &#8212; less than a week after the beatification of Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n<p>He notes that writer\/director Joff\u00e9 (who he has not met) describes himself as <em>&#8220;a wobbly agnostic&#8221;<\/em> but has created a film that depicts the Catholic faith in a positive light and finds something deeply attractive in the personal struggle of\u00a0 a saint.<\/p>\n<div>Finnerty says that, while Joff\u00e9 is quoted as saying that he doesn&#8217;t view his movie as a Catholic answer to <em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em>, he (Finnerty) would encourage anyone who has read that book or seen Ron Howard&#8217;s movie adaptation of it to see <em>There Be Dragons<\/em> which he describes as <em>&#8220;an artistic representation that is very well grounded in truth.&#8221; <\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>View the film&#8217;s trailer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z17OEqbrOOQ\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here&#8217;s a profile of\u00a0 Josemar\u00eda Escriv\u00e1 produced by Opus Dei.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"Who was Josemaria Escriva?\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5CC0bL9i1rg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>People in the News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/movies\/article\/michael-moore-bin-laden-wasnt-killed-he-was-executed-27097\">Michael Moore claims U.S. &#8220;executed&#8221; Osama Bin Laden.<\/a> <\/strong>The controversial documentarian says <em>&#8220;I am a Catholic, and the position of the Catholic Church and the Pope is  that we are 100 percent against the death penalty unless it is in  self-defense. Look at the Nuremberg Trials. We didn\u2019t just pop a bullet  in the heads of the worst scum in history. We thought it was important  to put them on trial and expose their evil. In a democracy we believe in  a system of justice and we believe in a judicial system that gives  people a day in court&#8230;and then we hung them.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em>Steven Tyler on the trauma of abortion. <\/strong>The <em>American Idol <\/em>judge and Aerosmith legend is out with a new memoir called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/Does-Noise-My-Head-Bother-You-Steven-Tyler\/?isbn=9780061767890\">Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?<\/a> <\/em> LifeNews.com, meanwhile, is recalling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walk-This-Way-Autobiography-Aerosmith\/dp\/0788199358\">an earlier book<\/a> co-authored by the rock star in which he movingly recounted the trauma of aborting his child. Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2011\/05\/04\/rocker-steven-tyler-of-aerosmith-haunted-by-girlfriends-abortion\/\">quote cited<\/a>: <em>\u201cIt was a big crisis. It\u2019s a major thing when you\u2019re growing something  with a woman, but they convinced us that it would never work out and  would ruin our lives. \u2026 You go to the doctor and they put the needle in  her belly and they squeeze the stuff in and you watch. And it comes out  dead. I was pretty devastated. In my mind, I\u2019m going, Jesus, what have I  done?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/woman-at-center-roe-v-184611\"><strong>Norma McCorvey makes her acting debut.<\/strong><\/a> The Roe of Roe v. Wade plaintiff, now a pro-life activist, will play a pivotal role in director Peter Mackenzie&#8217;s psychological thriller thriller <em>Doonby<\/em>.
