{"id":39663,"date":"2024-05-28T18:03:18","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T22:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/?p=39663"},"modified":"2024-05-28T18:15:44","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T22:15:44","slug":"don-mclean-debuts-the-ballad-of-george-floyd-sight-audience-likes-what-it-sees-medical-dramedy-tv-series-in-development-starring-dave-coulier-full-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/2024\/05\/don-mclean-debuts-the-ballad-of-george-floyd-sight-audience-likes-what-it-sees-medical-dramedy-tv-series-in-development-starring-dave-coulier-full-house.html","title":{"rendered":"Don McLean debuts &#8220;The Ballad of George Floyd&#8221; + &#8220;Sight&#8221; audience likes what it sees + Medical dramedy TV series in development starring Dave Coulier (&#8220;Full House&#8221;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Here&#8217;s the latest from the crossroads of faith, media &amp; culture: 05\/28\/24<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe title=\"Don McLean - The Ballad of George Floyd Lyric Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mdTBa6pxNJY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The day patriotism died.<\/strong> This past Saturday marked not only the start of Memorial Day weekend when we honor American heroes who gave their lives fighting for our democracy but also the fourth anniversary of the tragic killing of <strong>George Floyd. <\/strong>The music legend <strong>Don McLean<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithmediaandculture\/2023\/12\/legendary-singer-songwriter-don-mclean-shares-his-christmas-memories-and-why-he-thinks-this-time-of-year-is-so-important.html\">who I interviewed in this space in December<\/a>) wrote a song about the awful incident which affected the lives of this generation of Americans in, I think, in an even more profound way than the 1959 deaths of of rock stars he wrote about in his 1971 classic <strong><em>American Pie<\/em><\/strong> did its generation. <em><strong>The Ballad of George Floyd <\/strong><\/em>can be heard above and is included in McLean&#8217;s just-released new album <a href=\"https:\/\/orcd.co\/DonMcLeanAmericanBoys?utm_source=2911%20Media%20Alert&amp;utm_campaign=832dd78a76-2024-05_24_DonMcLean_StateDinner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6ce95af186-832dd78a76-56223642&amp;mc_cid=832dd78a76&amp;mc_eid=f016c671ec\"><em><strong>American Boys<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Talking about what inspired him to tackle the subject McLean says \u201cI knew &#8211; and know &#8211; this song would be controversial to put out there but it is exactly what I was feeling when I wrote it and, as an artistic (and) creative person, I just couldn\u2019t let my feelings go,\u201d adding \u201cI truly could hear George crying out for his mother as I wrote the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The George Floyd event justifiably galvanized the public in widespread agreement over the injustice done to him and over the broader issue of police reform which was indeed necessary to deal with the unacceptable level of violence that was too often being used against black men, particularly, in their encounters with law enforcement. Unfortunately, that opportunity for real progress on the issue was frittered away by politicians and activists who preferred the issue over solutions. Instead, we got a year of &#8220;mostly peaceful&#8221; protests that were used as cover for rioters, moves to defund the police which only served to endanger people in poor minority neighborhoods, the illegal tearing down of historic statues (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/portland-protesters-tear-down-statues-abraham-lincoln-theodore-roosevelt-n1242913\">absurdly even of <strong>Abraham Lincoln<\/strong><\/a>) and a general portrayal of America as evil to its core.<\/p>\n<p>The aftermath of the killing played out like a national autoimmune disease in which our ideals and cultural conscience, which rightly are trained to stand against racism and injustice, were unleashed like antibodies run amok against the nation itself. The result has been not justice but destructive division.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t actually think patriotism is dead &#8211; but it has taken a big hit over the last few years. It&#8217;s time to return to the ideal of working together to solve our problems and to stop allowing that very ideal to be used by those who cynically use what is best about us against us.<br \/>\n_____<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sFlh5c pT0Scc iPVvYb\" src=\"https:\/\/images.angelstudios.com\/image\/upload\/v1706551563\/studio-app\/catalog\/df5d4fcf-1311-47de-b87a-b0950fa1dfef.jpg\" alt=\"Sight (2024) | Official Website | Now Playing In Theaters\" width=\"933\" height=\"525\" aria-hidden=\"false\" \/><\/p>\n<div><strong>The gift of <em>Sight<\/em>. Angel Studios<\/strong>&#8216; inspirational biopic<em><strong> Sight<\/strong><\/em> came in seventh at the box office over the Memorial Day weekend and, impressively, scored an <strong>A+ CinemaScore<\/strong> with audiences under the age of 24 \u2014 proving rather dramatically that the young generation is as hungry for hopeful, optimistic entertainment as the rest of us. Meanwhile, on <strong>Rotten Tomatoes<\/strong> the movie received a 98% score from the general audience while scoring only 67% with critics &#8211; offering further confirmation that critics are generally out of step with the public.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As noted here Friday, <em>Sight<\/em> tells the inspiring story of <strong>Dr. Ming Wang<\/strong> who overcame childhood adversity to pursue his dream of attending medical school in the United States. After receiving degrees at <strong>Harvard<\/strong> and <strong>MIT<\/strong>, his groundbreaking invention of amniotic membrane contact lenses and his philanthropic efforts through his foundation have made a significant impact on the lives of millions worldwide.
