{"id":1789,"date":"2011-12-07T17:48:02","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T22:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/faithandjustice\/?p=1789"},"modified":"2011-12-07T14:58:28","modified_gmt":"2011-12-07T19:58:28","slug":"jay-sekulow-update-aclj-support-for-mt-jesus-statue-dominates-comments-to-feds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/faithandjustice\/2011\/12\/jay-sekulow-update-aclj-support-for-mt-jesus-statue-dominates-comments-to-feds.html","title":{"rendered":"Jay Sekulow: UPDATE &#8211; ACLJ Support for MT Jesus Statue Dominates Comments to Feds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/faithandjustice\/files\/2011\/10\/573406034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1451\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/240\/2011\/10\/573406034-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>Your voice has been heard!<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/faithandjustice\/2011\/12\/jay-sekulow-70000-urge-feds-to-keep-montana-jesus-statue-in-place.html\" target=\"_blank\">Last week<\/a>, we sent the National Forest Service our letter defending the Jesus war memorial statue on a Montana mountain &#8211; with more than 70,000 names &#8211; concerned individuals who stood with us in urging the Forest Service to renew a long-standing lease that would permit this historic memorial to stay atop Big Mountain, where it was placed nearly 60 years ago.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist, anti-Christian group, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnd.com\/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&amp;pageId=373873\" target=\"_blank\">opposing<\/a> the lease renewal, calling this display &#8220;a ruse and a sham.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We sent our <a href=\"http:\/\/c0391070.cdn2.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com\/pdf\/letter-forest-service-support-montana-jesus-statue-war-memorial.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">legal analysis<\/a> explaining why this memorial should remain in place &#8211; a constitutionally-permissible expression to mark the sacrifice and honor World War II veterans who gave their lives defending liberty.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nWe included the names of individuals who signed on to our letter. The names of 70,148 concerned individuals were printed and sent along with our letter.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nI knew it would make an impact. But I had no idea how much. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyinterlake.com\/news\/local_montana\/article_5090632e-2071-11e1-832a-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">Forest Service spokesperson says a little more than 90,000 comments have been submitted<\/a> about the war memorial. <strong>Our submission &#8211; that included the names of 70,148 concerned individuals &#8211; represents nearly 80% of the total comments received<\/strong>. That&#8217;s right, without a doubt &#8211; your voice has been heard.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAnother 10,000 comments backing the statue and the lease renewal came from Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg&#8217;s congressional website.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe deadline for public comment is tomorrow. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyinterlake.com\/news\/local_montana\/article_5090632e-2071-11e1-832a-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">Forest Service<\/a> says it will &#8220;review&#8221; the comments and prepare &#8220;a decision memo&#8221; on whether to renew the lease permitting the statue to remain in place. The federal agency says that&#8217;s expected to occur in late January or early February.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re hopeful the Forest Service rejects the flawed logic of the FFRF and takes the appropriate action by renewing the lease &#8211; clearing the way for the Jesus war memorial statue to remain in place.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThanks to all of you who have stood with us on this issue.
