It is normal in society today. People are so busy, they don’t take time for themselves. Food is done within seconds, the Internet is faster than ever and life in general is moving at breakneck speed. The constant fast pace can stress you out and ultimately, you are missing out on a lot of the little, enjoyable things in life. Most people don’t realize how fast life moves until is too late.

Ready to slow down a little? Here are five ways you can slow down a little and enjoy life more.

1. Stop trying to multitask every single thing you do. Sit down and enjoy a meal without the television on or your cell phone in your hand. Enjoy your meal with your family. Savor the food. Don’t rush through the meal because you have to get to that paperwork. The paperwork will still be there in 30 minutes or even an hour.

2. Realize you are not perfect and nobody expects you to be. You don’t have to be the best. Do what you can and accept it. Staying up all night working on a presentation or stressing yourself out and putting in 60 hours a week to be the best employee isn’t doing you any good. Spend time with your loved ones—they are who truly matter.

3. Schedule some downtime. For many, this seems naughty and like you are cheating somebody. The only person getting cheated is you. You don’t have to always say yes and take on every carpool duty or pick up the slack for others. You need a few hours a week for just you to simply relax, meditate, nap or whatever it is that will help you enjoy life a bit more.

4. Spend time outdoors. Take a walk through the park and feed the ducks or sit on a park bench and feed birds. Go hiking, skiing or whatever outdoor sport you enjoy the most. These are the good things in life and too often people claim they simply don’t have time to do the things they love. Make the time!

5. Get up a little earlier so you are not rushing to work. Schedule fewer meetings, appointments or engagements with friends. Don’t max yourself out. If you are running a few minutes late, you won’t have to worry and stress because you have given yourself extra time. You don’t have to do everything in a single day or even a single week.

About Alex Blackwell
Alex Blackwell is a father, husband and writer.

“The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.” – Moliere Do you sometimes feel like you are on a racetrack?
