Yet lately you’ve been feeling tired and drained. You enjoy your work and you enjoy being busy, but recently you’ve started feeling un-motivated.

You also notice that you have trouble sleeping and your appetite has changed. And yes, you have started feeling overwhelmed for the first time ever.

What you may be experiencing is a burnout.

Burnout happens gradually. But if you are not aware of its effects, it can slowly sneak up on you and wreak havoc both physically and mentally. So, it’s best to pay attention to the warning signs.

Here are some simple ways to keep burning brightly without burning out.

1. Start your day with a calming ritual. As soon as you wake in the mornings, spend at least 5-10 minutes just trying to be aware of your surroundings instead of jumping out of bed. Think of relaxing, positive thoughts or better yet, get into the habit of meditation. You can make your own mantra such as “I choose to be happy today”, or “No harm will come to me today”, “I will be a positive influence on others.”

2. Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy heart. When you choose to live a healthy lifestyle – eating correctly, regular physical routine and adequate rest, you are giving your body the energy and flexibility to deal with life’s demands.

3. Get creative. Doing something that shows and explores your creativity as well as give you pleasure is a powerful shield against burnout. You can either pick a new interesting hobby or resume one that you have put on the shelf years ago. Steer your mind away from activities that are similar to work.

4. Disconnect to connect. This means taking a break from emails, phone calls, Facebook, Twitter or anything that makes you visible in the technological world. Set time to do this each day.

5. Learn how to say ‘No.’ Do not overstretch yourself. You need to learn to turn down requests especially when it is encroaching on your right to be happy.

About Alex Blackwell
Alex Blackwell is a father, husband and writer.

“Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.” – Ovid You are a high-achiever and successful in everything you set out to do.
