{"id":209,"date":"2018-02-14T23:07:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T23:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/everydayfaith\/?p=209"},"modified":"2018-01-19T23:07:52","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T23:07:52","slug":"return-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/everydayfaith\/2018\/02\/return-to-me.html","title":{"rendered":"RETURN TO ME"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even now, says the Lord,<\/p>\n<p>return to me with your whole heart,<\/p>\n<p>with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;<\/p>\n<p>Rend your hearts, not your garments,<\/p>\n<p>and return to the Lord, your God.<\/p>\n<p>For gracious and merciful is he,<\/p>\n<p>slow to anger, rich in kindness,<\/p>\n<p>and relenting in punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he will again relent<\/p>\n<p>and leave behind him a blessing,<\/p>\n<p>Offerings and libations<\/p>\n<p>for the Lord, your God.<\/p>\n<p>~Joel 2:12-14<\/p>\n<p>When Mom and I went to Mass for Ash Wednesday, this beautiful passage from the book of Joel was one of the readings, and it stayed with me afterwards, especially the line: \u201cRend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>God is interested in what is in our hearts. \u201cReturn to Me,\u201d says God. Let\u2019s use this time of pursuing our dreams as a journey of spiritual renewal in which we return to God and let Him speak to our hearts and renew our spirits.<\/p>\n<p>I will confess that there have been times when I allowed my morning devotional to become a substitute for attending church, which it&#8217;s not meant to be. Personal daily devotions have one place in our spiritual life, and attending church belongs to the part of us that needs communion with others.<\/p>\n<p>I am returning to God through my commitment to go back to church and work on a part of my faith that I&#8217;m not generally comfortable with, being part of a church community. I am choosing to overcome my public shyness and embrace my greater desire for communion with other Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Are you part of a regular church community?
