Her supporters are left<br \/>\nreeling in confusion, and her critics are chalking this up to more bizarre<br \/>\nbehavior from the 2008 vice-presidential candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">To some, such as the<br \/>\nDemocratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse, her motives are<br \/>\ncompletely self-involved:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Either Sarah Palin is<br \/>\nleaving the people of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/topics.edition.cnn.com\/topics\/Alaska\"><span style=\"color:#154272\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Alaska<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"> high and dry<br \/>\nto pursue her long-shot national political ambitions, or she simply can&#8217;t<br \/>\nhandle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are<br \/>\ndown.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Palin,<br \/>\nhowever, said in her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,1908669,00.html\">announcement<\/a> that she wants to work for all Americans, not<br \/>\njust Alaskans:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8220;And finally, I polled the most important people<br \/>\nin my life, my kids. And the count was unanimous. While in response to asking,<br \/>\n&#8216;Hey, do you want me to be a positive influence and fight for all our<br \/>\nchildren&#8217;s futures from outside the governor&#8217;s office?&#8217; it was four yeses and<br \/>\none &#8216;Hell, yeah.&#8217; The &#8216;Hell, yeah&#8217; sold it.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">I&#8217;m just as intrigued by this sudden and surprising move as the next person,<br \/>\nbut I&#8217;m also wondering whether abandoning one cause (the Alaskan people and<br \/>\nstate) for a higher cause (the future of America) is the type of ethical<br \/>\nbehavior we want from a future leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Obviously<br \/>\nthis is assuming that Palin is resigning to better her chances in 2012. It&#8217;s<br \/>\nalso assuming she&#8217;s doing this because she feels she can &#8220;be a positive<br \/>\ninfluence and fight for all our children&#8217;s futures&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">One<br \/>\nof the qualities we look for in a leader is the ability to <span>sometimes<\/span> put aside the needs of the<br \/>\nfew in order to serve the needs of the many. However we rarely look for a<br \/>\nleader who has a history of abandonment, regardless of the reasons behind that<br \/>\nabandonment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">What<br \/>\ndo you think? If Palin made <\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">this<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial\"> decision in order to<br \/>\nenact positive change in America, was it the ethical choice?
