I<br \/>\nonly grab as much sweetener as might actually, feasibly sweeten the coffee I <i>have<\/i>, rather than stuffing 80 packets in<br \/>\nmy purse, the way <i>some<\/i> people do.<br \/>\nHeck, I don&#8217;t even plug my laptop in without first making sure the staff don&#8217;t<br \/>\nmind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial\">Basically, what I&#8217;m trying to say is, I believe in good<br \/>\nrestaurant etiquette. I know these little java joints have a slim profit<br \/>\nmargin, and nibblers like me aren&#8217;t helping by hogging their tables, mooching<br \/>\noff their internet while we nurse a single bagel for three hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial\">Which is why I tip at least a buck with each purchase when I plan to hang out<br \/>\nin a coffee house to work, even if all I&#8217;m getting is a beverage that costs<br \/>\nroughly that same amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial\">Yet when I dropped my dollar in the bucket today, I got<br \/>\ngrumpy. Not that I resented spending the money. If I want to save cash, I can<br \/>\nwork from home. And the baristas are quite nice at the caf\u00e9 I frequent. So it wasn&#8217;t the money or the service that got my goat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial\">The problem was, <i>they<br \/>\ndidn&#8217;t notice<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial\">I&#8217;m reminded of a classic Seinfeld episode, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0697669\/\">The<br \/>\nCalzone<\/a>.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\">In it, George so badly wants his &#8216;generous&#8217; tip to get noticed,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/seinfeld\/the-calzone\/episode\/2370\/summary.html\">he ends up getting accused of stealing from the tip jar<\/a>&nbsp;when he tries to take his money back and drop it in again later when the guy behind the counter is actually paying attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\">I totally get that.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\">Much as it pains me to admit it, I don&#8217;t just do good deeds to do them, I do them to be&nbsp;<i>seen<\/i>&nbsp;doing them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\">Why is that? Would a truly decent human not worry about whether her thoughtful behavior goes unnoticed? Does it make me a crummy person if I want recognition for doing the &#8216;right&#8217; thing?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Arial\">Yeah. Maybe somewhat. But in my opinion, ethics, decency, and all that are really about the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_Contract_(Rousseau)\">social contract<\/a>; i.e., doing our part to make sure society functions. We get something, we give something, the world continues to go around.
