I was waiting in line to get on an airplane about ten years
\nago, and noticed the man behind me looked familiar.  <\/span>Looking closer at him, I realized it was Walter Cronkite,
\nformer anchor of CBS Evening News.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He realized that I knew it was him.  <\/span>Before I could confirm with him, he was
\nasking what I did and me who I was. 
\n<\/span>Cronkite was genuinely interested in me!  <\/span>I told him I was a writer and producer, and he was delighted
\nto hear that I worked in his medium. 
\n<\/span>Telling me that he loved telling stories and connecting with people, I
\nheartily agreed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We chatted a few more minutes until we were on the plane and
\nsaid goodbye.  <\/span>I was so impressed
\nthat this legend of a man was genuinely interested in me, not caring at all
\nabout his fame and notoriety.  <\/span>He
\nwas just a really friendly, caring person, totally immersed in the moment of
\ntalking to another person and sharing a common experience.  <\/span>No pretense, or grandiosity; no ego
\nhunger needing to be stroked; not even the need for acknowledgement of his name
\nor persona.  <\/span>He didn’t wear any
\ndisguises, like many other famous people do.  <\/span>As a matter of fact, he was so non-shalant, that I don’t
\nthink anyone else in the airport waiting area knew who he was.  <\/span>Somewhat short, older, white-haired,
\nand acting like everyone else, he didn’t stand-out in the crowd.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I think Walter Cronkite’s honest interest and care for
\nothers is what made him so successful. 
\n<\/span>He didn’t seem to be engaged in his celebrity, much less need it for
\nhimself.  <\/span>He was completely
\nfascinated in people, and what they were doing, and liked to share his humanity
\nwith others.<\/p>\n
