{"id":1176,"date":"2011-05-05T16:13:34","date_gmt":"2011-05-05T20:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/drnorrischumleysatisfiedlife\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2011-05-05T16:13:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-05T20:13:34","slug":"about-that-national-day-of-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/drnorrischumleysatisfiedlife\/2011\/05\/about-that-national-day-of-prayer.html","title":{"rendered":"About That National Day of Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama recently proclaimed that May 5<sup>th<\/sup> is National Day of Prayer in the United States.\u00a0 But that\u2019s controversial.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Last year a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. found that having a government sponsored day of prayer was unconstitutional \u2013 you know \u2013 separation of church and state, and that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>On April 14, 2011 the 7<sup>th<\/sup> U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that ruling, because of a technicality: the Freedom from Religion Foundation, the group that filed the suit \u2013 lacked standing or the legal right to bring the suit.<\/p>\n<p>Do these courts or the Freedom from Religion Foundation represent us?\u00a0 Sure, but only partially, and not all of us.\u00a0 Survey after survey for many years have reported that Americans are believers and pray, some 6 in 10 adults pray on a daily basis, according to the 2007 U.S. Religious Landscape survey, conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.<a href=\"http:\/\/religions.pewforum.org\/\"> http:\/\/religions.pewforum.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think it\u2019s great that our President prays.\u00a0 We need a leader who loves and worships God.\u00a0 I also think that it\u2019s fine that he wants to have a prayer holiday, or at least a day of recognition.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a law; religious worship isn\u2019t required of citizens, just commemorated.\u00a0 Kind of like Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>I pray constantly, throughout the day.\u00a0 I pray the Jesus Prayer, \u201cLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 You probably know I\u2019ve devoted many years to making a movie and writing a book about this prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Do YOU pray?\u00a0 What do YOU think about a national day of prayer?\u00a0 PLEASE COMMENT below.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama recently proclaimed that May 5th is National Day of Prayer in the United States.\u00a0 But that\u2019s controversial.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Last year a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. found that having a government sponsored day of prayer was unconstitutional \u2013 you know \u2013 separation of church and state, and that sort of thing.
