We let other people determine what&#8217;s important.<br \/>\nWe let them define who we are and what we are able and not able to do and<br \/>\nbecome. Ruled by habit and the need to get through the daily grind, we forget<br \/>\nthat our lives may have a larger purpose.&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"'Palatino Linotype', serif\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>Dreaming, we wake up to a bigger story. The moment of awakening<br \/>\nmay come in a sleep dream, when we get out of our own way and it is easier for<br \/>\nus to encounter something beyond the projections of the daily trivial mind and<br \/>\nthe consensual hallucinations that weave much of our default reality.&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>The awakening may come in the liminal zone between sleep and<br \/>\nwaking that the French used to call <i>dorveille<\/i>, which literally means<br \/>\nsleep-wake.&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>It may come in a flash of illumination during a walk in nature,<br \/>\nperhaps at the moment when the sun rises above the mountains and opens a path<br \/>\nacross a lake. The awakening may be hard-won. It may come at the<br \/>\nprice of illness, defeat or despair, of events or recurring disappointments<br \/>\nthat push us down and back so hard we have to re-vision and revalue everything<br \/>\nwe once held to be givens.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-right:.2in;margin-bottom:0in;margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:150%\"><span>The initiation may come in the way familiar to true shamans, when<br \/>\na power of the deeper life seizes us and tears us apart and consents, when we<br \/>\nare re-membered, to become our life ally. Angels can appear as fierce as<br \/>\ntigers, or as tigers.
