They tell you you’re too sensitive, overreacting, or imagining things. After hearing it enough times, you begin to wonder if they’re right.

You may be experiencing gaslighting. The term comes from the 1938 play Gas Light (later adapted into films). In the story, a husband secretly dims the gas lights in the home but repeatedly insists to his wife that the lights have not changed. Over time, his relentless denial causes her to question her own perceptions and sanity.

Today, psychologists use the term gaslighting to describe a pattern of emotional abuse in which one person deliberately manipulates another into doubting their memory, perceptions, judgment, or reality. It is not simply lying or having a disagreement. It is a repeated attempt to distort another person’s confidence in what they know to be true in order to gain power and control.

Gaslighting rarely happens overnight. It usually develops gradually. An emotionally abusive person may deny events that clearly occurred, twist conversations, withhold important information, shift blame, trivialize feelings, or accuse the other person of being “too emotional,” “too sensitive,” or “crazy.” They may insist, “That never happened,” “You’re remembering it wrong,” or “You’re imagining things.”

Over time, this pattern can be profoundly damaging.

Research on emotional abuse and coercive control shows that chronic psychological manipulation can erode self-confidence, increase anxiety and depression, contribute to symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and make it difficult to trust one’s own thoughts and decisions. Living in a constant state of self-doubt also creates chronic stress. When the brain remains on high alert, concentration, memory, and decision-making often become less efficient. Ironically, the very stress caused by the abuse can make someone more forgetful, which the abuser then uses as “proof” that the victim cannot trust themselves.

One of the most heartbreaking consequences is that the victim gradually begins relying on the abuser to determine what is real. This dependence gives the abusive person even greater control over the relationship.

Recognizing the pattern is often the first step recovering your sense of reality.

Because gaslighting involves manipulation rather than simple conflict, recovery frequently requires support from trusted people. For many individuals, working with a licensed therapist who understands emotional abuse or trauma can be invaluable. Therapy helps people rebuild confidence in their own perceptions, establish healthy boundaries, identify manipulation tactics, and develop practical strategies for responding safely. In some situations, creating emotional or physical distance from the abusive relationship may be necessary, particularly if the abuse continues or escalates.

For Christians, healing also involves rebuilding trust in the One who never deceives.

God is trustworthy. His Word is trustworthy. Unlike an abusive person who distorts reality for personal gain, God speaks truth in love. Scripture reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), loved by Christ (Romans 5:8), and created in His image (Genesis 1:27). No abusive person has the authority to define your worth, your identity, or your reality. God already has.

As you heal, immerse yourself in God’s truth and surround yourself with people who reflect His character; people who encourage honesty, humility, accountability, and grace rather than manipulation and control.

If someone repeatedly causes you to question your sanity, dismisses your experiences, or continually rewrites reality, don’t ignore those warning signs. Seek wise counsel. Reach out for professional help if needed. Healing is possible, and with God’s help, you can learn to trust your own voice again while resting securely in the truth of His.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation wondering if you were losing your mind? You clearly remember what was said, yet someone insists it never happened.
