It&#8217;s hard for me to hear, given I am single and have to watch every penny I spend. It&#8217;s like she flaunts her lifestyle with no sensitivity to how I&#8217;m feeling. I admit, I&#8217;m envious of her life. I know that&#8217;s wrong as a Christian, but I&#8217;m struggling.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Can you relate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Envy isn&#8217;t an easy emotion to control. And in a culture of constant comparison, we have more opportunities than ever to experience it. Scroll through social media and you&#8217;ll see someone&#8217;s beautiful vacation, newly renovated home, career success, happy family, or seemingly perfect marriage. Even when we know we&#8217;re seeing a carefully curated snapshot and not the whole story, we can still find ourselves thinking,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Why can&#8217;t my life be like that?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">That&#8217;s when the green-eyed monster called envy can creep in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Envy focuses our attention on what someone else has that we wish we had. The more we compare, the more dissatisfied we can become with our own lives. Psychologically, social comparison can influence how we evaluate ourselves and our circumstances. Spiritually, envy can shift our focus away from God&#8217;s provision and toward what we believe we&#8217;re missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">While envy and jealousy are close cousins, there is a difference. Jealousy typically involves the fear of losing something or someone you already have. You might feel jealous when you fear losing your spouse&#8217;s attention to another person. Envy, on the other hand, is wanting something someone else has\u2014a relationship, lifestyle, success, appearance, opportunity, or possession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">So, what do you do when envy shows up? Pay attention to it rather than allowing it to quietly take root. The Bible has much to say about this powerful emotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Choose love over comparison.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nFirst Corinthians 13:4 reminds us, &#8220;Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast.&#8221; When God&#8217;s love is working in us, we can learn to respond differently to the blessings of others. Rather than seeing their good fortune as evidence of what we lack, we can celebrate with them while trusting God with our own needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Recognize where envy can lead.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nJames 3:16 warns that where envy and selfish ambition exist, &#8220;there will be disorder and every vile practice.&#8221; Envy rarely stays contained. Left unchecked, it can breed resentment, bitterness, gossip, competition, and even damaged relationships. That&#8217;s why we need to deal with it early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Keep your eyes on what matters.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nProverbs 23:17 tells us not to envy those who appear to prosper apart from God. It&#8217;s easy to look at the rich, famous, or successful and wonder,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Why do they have so much?<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But appearances can be deceiving. Our calling is not to measure our lives against someone else&#8217;s highlight reel but to remain faithful to God and focused on what has eternal value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Protect your peace.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nProverbs 14:30 says, &#8220;A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.&#8221; What a powerful image. Envy steals peace because it keeps our minds focused on what we don&#8217;t have. Rumination and chronic negative emotions can also contribute to stress and diminish emotional well-being. Envy doesn&#8217;t hurt the person you&#8217;re envying nearly as much as it hurts you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Don&#8217;t provoke envy in others.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nGalatians 5:26 warns against becoming conceited, provoking and envying one another. This is important in our social-media age. James 1:17 reminds us that every good and perfect gift ultimately comes from God. Our blessings aren&#8217;t trophies to flaunt or proof that we&#8217;re more important than someone else. Enjoy them with humility and sensitivity toward those who may be struggling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Put envy away.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nFirst Peter 2:1 tells us to &#8220;put away&#8221; envy along with malice, deceit, hypocrisy, and slander. In practical terms, when an envious thought appears, don&#8217;t feed it. Notice it. Challenge the comparison. Take the thought captive and redirect your attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Then practice one of the most powerful antidotes to envy:<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">gratitude<\/span><\/strong><b>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isselectedend\" style=\"caret-color: #000000; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid; word-spacing: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Instead of obsessing over what someone else has, intentionally notice what God has already given you. Name your blessings. Thank God for them.
