It is characterized by constant worry which leads to pervasive feelings of anxiety. Someone with GAD may interpret any emotion such as feeling sad, as a reason for worry. This leads to negative emotions. The result is more anxiety. Thus, a vicious cycle can ensue. Worrisome events produce worrisome thoughts which lead to more feelings of anxiety.

Dealing with worry is key to feeling less anxious. Worry anticipates the future in a fearful and negative way. Worry takes us away from the here and now and distracts us from the truth of who God is and the reality of the moment. It is a mental habit based on negative thoughts and doubts that are future focused. From a spiritual perspective, worry falsely assumes that God has left us for the moment or is immobilized; He can’t or won’t act. Neither of which is true.

When difficulty comes and the moment feels desperate or troubled, remember God does not abandon us even though it may feel that way. He is completely in control of each moment. Someone put it this way, hell may be at work, but Jesus triumphed over hell through His resurrection. In other words, in the middle of difficulty, His quiet presence always remains with us.

Feeling anxious? Abandon your worry at this moment. Take a deep breath and remind yourself, God is here. He is in the moment.

Then meditate:

Psalm 8:4—What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? God’s care and presence are 24/7.

Matthew 11:28-30—Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Transfer your worries to God.

So, when you feel anxious, be mindful of the moment. God’s presence in it. Then, be reassured that whatever feels out of control, is in His control.

Many people suffer from what is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
