Now, all she can do is make it through the day. Something has changed. She is disconnected and flat in her conversations. She has all the signs of\u00a0burn\u00a0out and needs recovery.\u00a0It could happen to any of us if we aren&#8217;t careful. So here are a few ideas to hopefully prevent burn out.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Balance your workload.\u00a0<\/strong>High\u00a0achievers\u00a0tend to be conscientious and expect long hours in order to keep up with multiple expectations and demands. Constant attention to the schedule and self-compassion is needed. Competent people\u00a0often have difficulty saying NO.\u00a0Taking on too much leads to being overworked, less productive and exhaustion. Ways to help this include:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Say no to work overload or ask for additional staff, a contract stating reasonable expectations, study leave, vacations and sabbaticals<\/li>\n<li>Insist on keeping your days off and protect those days<\/li>\n<li>Look for resources to make the work less energy and time consuming<\/li>\n<li>If you can, be selective in giving out your cell number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Have choices and control<\/strong>. Avoid the extremes \u2013don&#8217;t be a dictator or abdicate control.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Make role expectations very clear<\/li>\n<li>Extend trust -if it becomes a problem, allow people to earn it back. Trusted people can help\u00a0cover the load<\/li>\n<li>Stop micromanaging<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate on the development of policies \u00a0and share tasks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Build a sense of belonging and community<\/strong>. When there is a breakdown of community, teams don\u2019t function. You being to isolate rather than do life together. A colleague uses the phrase, &#8220;Better Together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accept people for who they are and offer much grace<\/li>\n<li>Value diversity and opinions of others<\/li>\n<li>Operate with fairness\u2014transparency and mutual respect.
