Are you overtired, skipping meals, not sleeping well? Those constant headaches could signal depression, and your behaviour is just a symptom.

Constant headaches can mean you’re depressed

There are many types of headaches. Tension type headaches and migraines have emotional triggers such as depression. Depression can be an underlying cause or be created by the pain from these headaches.

Tension type headaches that last signal depression

Tension types headache is that tight band of pain around your head, that throbs or has a dull ache to it. A tension headache is triggered by stress, anxiety, panic, trauma, and depression. It can last from 30 minutes to several weeks. This is nasty for any person, so imagine being depressed and having a tension headache. Tensions headaches deepen depression and anxiety because of the constant pain impacting the depressed person. It becomes a vicious circle where pain feeds depression, and depression feeds the intensity of pain.

Treatments include over the counter headache medications. But because depression is also present in the tension headache, regular pain medications won’t be enough. You also need to deal with the depression. Which means taking some type of anti-depressant.

If you feel able enough to move, you might want to try alternative treatments like yoga and meditation. It’s tough to meditate though when your head feels like its ready to explode. Massage and gentle stretches help. Apply some heat therapy which is a warm shower or bath.

Wet a towel with water. Apply either a cold or warm towel to the back of the neck, around the forehead and temple regions. You can also immerse your feet in a container of cold water. Blood pools in the feet, and having your feet in cold water cools down the temperature of blood returning to your heart, blood which is then pumped to your brain. Cooler blood can help tighten blood vessels so there’s less pressure inside your head.

Migraines can mean you’re depressed

Migraines affect women three times more than men. Sometimes only one side of your head hurts, other times its both. Migraines are known to be triggered by emotions. If you know what emotional triggers create your migraines, try avoiding those triggers. Depression is notorious for creating migraines. Extreme anxiety can create a migraine. There are many types of medications that treat migraines. It will take time to find one that works well for you.

Surprisingly small amounts of caffeine can lessen a migraine. That’s why some people drink big bottles of coke when they have a migraine. The sugar and caffeine dulls the pain. TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) helps lessen pain of migraines with auras.

Be in control of pain

It’s easy to get lost in pain. One of the best things you can do for yourself is regain control of how much pain you suffer. If migraines or constant headaches are part of your life, you need to visit a professional who can help lessen the pain. While you may not be able to get rid of depression or anxiety, managing your symptoms and reducing the time spent with constant headaches will improve your quality of life.

Find me on Twitter @tereziafarkas

Visit my website http://www.tereziafarkas.com

BUY NOW

 Do you suffer constant headaches?
