{"id":741,"date":"2009-04-26T22:59:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-26T22:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/04\/pseudo-ordination-updated.html"},"modified":"2009-04-26T22:59:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-26T22:59:00","slug":"pseudo-ordination-updated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/04\/pseudo-ordination-updated.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Pseudo-ordination&#8221;&#8211; UPDATED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, there they go again.<\/p>\n<p>A New Jersey woman this weekend took part in a ceremony in which she says she was ordained a Catholic priest.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2009\/04\/nj_woman_is_ordained_as_a_prie.html\">Newark Star-Ledger<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> <a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SfUhde4lRAI\/AAAAAAAAFek\/DI1sriOfvrw\/s1600-h\/large_priest1.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 320px;height: 213px\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SfUhde4lRAI\/AAAAAAAAFek\/DI1sriOfvrw\/s320\/large_priest1.JPG\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Last July, Mary Ann Schoettly was automatically excommunicated from the Catholic Church after a ceremony that she says made her a deacon &#8212; a ceremony conducted in willful defiance of her religion&#8217;s ban on ordaining women.<\/p>\n<p>Today, in the eyes of a small group of renegade Catholics who believe women should be allowed into the Catholic priesthood, the 66-year-old Sussex County resident was ordained a priest, in a controversial ceremony held at a synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a very fulfilling experience,&#8221; said Schoettly, a retired high school biology teacher and the 47th female priest associated with the international group Roman Catholic Womenpriests. &#8220;It is something that I have recognized in myself for years and haven&#8217;t been able to follow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Schoettly (pronounced Shot-lee), who lives in Fredon, is not connected with any Catholic diocese as a priest and will not preach at any diocesan church. She said she plans to celebrate Mass at her home, a three-bedroom ranch, at least once a month for small groups.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s ceremony was conducted by two women who Roman Catholic Womenpriests believes are bishops but who Vatican officials have said also have been excommunicated.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Justin Regali, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, denounced today&#8217;s ceremony as a &#8220;pseudo-Ordination&#8221; that was not genuine and worried that it may confuse Catholics about church teachings. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> You can read more at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2009\/04\/nj_woman_is_ordained_as_a_prie.html\">the link<\/a>, and see a photo gallery of the ceremony. <\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> Cardinal Rigali has announced that the participants in the ceremony &#8212; both the two women claiming to be ordained, and those who claim to have ordained them &#8212; are now excommunicated.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/new.php?n=15800\">Read more here<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:78%\"><b>PHOTO:<\/b><i>  During the ceremony Mary Ann Schoettly, right, experiences the Laying On of Hands by Bishop Andrea Johnson.
