{"id":545,"date":"2009-06-17T16:46:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-17T16:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/06\/relic-of-st-therese-stolen-in-toronto.html"},"modified":"2009-06-17T16:46:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-17T16:46:00","slug":"relic-of-st-therese-stolen-in-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/06\/relic-of-st-therese-stolen-in-toronto.html","title":{"rendered":"Relic of St. Therese stolen in Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bizarre and sad bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/news\/Catholic+relic+nicked+from+Toronto+church\/1705625\/story.html\">news<\/a> out of Canada:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> A Catholic Church in Toronto is hoping for a miracle \u2014 that the thief who stole a saint&#8217;s relic will have a change of heart and return the holy object.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SjlW_6ZisLI\/AAAAAAAAFwQ\/IYqCypC6OYY\/s1600-h\/therese1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;width: 217px;height: 320px\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SjlW_6ZisLI\/AAAAAAAAFwQ\/IYqCypC6OYY\/s320\/therese1.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The relic of St. Therese of Lisieux, patron saint of missions, is a small piece of her body \u2014 about the size of a quarter \u2014 which could have easily fit in the pocket of the thief.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Fleming, spokeswoman for St. Michael&#8217;s Catholic Church, said the thief may have pretended to be praying at the saint&#8217;s shrine while he or she removed the relic&#8217;s Plexiglas cover and stole it between services on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because the church is open every day, all day, we have lots of people who come in and they kneel at the statue and say prayers,&#8221; she said Wednesday. &#8220;Some will put their hand up to touch the statue at the same time, so you can&#8217;t really see what they&#8217;re doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If someone took on that posture, we would never go over and ask them to move along,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>While the thief got away with the relic \u2014 estimated to be worth between $3,000 and $5,000 \u2014 he or she left behind the small, silver broach-like piece that had contained it.<\/p>\n<p>The thief also didn&#8217;t get the relic&#8217;s Vatican-issued certificate of authenticity, which is kept in an office in the church, so Fleming doesn&#8217;t know how the thief will be able to prove the relic&#8217;s worth to prospective buyers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think a pawnshop would understand what it is and want to buy it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like taking a solid gold chalice.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> There are more details at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/news\/Catholic+relic+nicked+from+Toronto+church\/1705625\/story.html\">the link<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bizarre and sad bit of news out of Canada: A Catholic Church in Toronto is hoping for a miracle \u2014 that the thief who stole a saint&#8217;s relic will have a change of heart and return the holy object.
