{"id":5092,"date":"2010-10-19T21:34:26","date_gmt":"2010-10-19T21:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2010\/10\/archbishop-nienstedt-you-have-to-be-100-catholic.html"},"modified":"2010-10-19T21:34:26","modified_gmt":"2010-10-19T21:34:26","slug":"archbishop-nienstedt-you-have-to-be-100-catholic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2010\/10\/archbishop-nienstedt-you-have-to-be-100-catholic.html","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop Nienstedt: &#8220;You have to be 100% Catholic&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The prelate who&#8217;s sparked some controversy lately is explaining himself with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/2010-10-20-catholic19_ST_N.htm\">this interview: <\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe Catholic archbishop for the Twin Cities defended his right Monday to speak to fellow Catholics on social issues, and said a shrinking Roman Catholic church is no reason to consider a more liberal stance.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/twincityx-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"twincityx-large.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/212\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/10\/twincityx-large-thumb-250x288-18685.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt\" height=\"288\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/span>Archbishop John Nienstedt sat down with The Associated Press after a weekend in which the St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese announced it would close 21 churches to reflect churchgoers&#8217; move from urban areas to suburbia, declines in regular church attendance and an expectation of fewer new priests to replace those who retire or die.<\/p>\n<p>The archbishop, who recently angered some of the area&#8217;s 800,000 Catholics with the mailing of an anti-gay marriage DVD, said he believes spiritual leaders have a duty to talk to their flock about issues they see as important &#8212; even if some of those views might be unpopular with prospective churchgoers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re part and parcel of the culture, so it&#8217;s important for us to be involved with those discussions and have our say,&#8221; Nienstedt said. He said Jesus Christ directed his followers to &#8220;either be hot or cold, but if you&#8217;re lukewarm, I don&#8217;t want that.
