{"id":4985,"date":"2010-10-06T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2010\/10\/the-newest-glee-club-priests.html"},"modified":"2010-10-06T10:30:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T10:30:00","slug":"the-newest-glee-club-priests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2010\/10\/the-newest-glee-club-priests.html","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t stop believing: &#8220;Glee&#8221; gets religion &#8212; UPDATED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/101glee_sc-79_6025-500x346.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"101glee_sc-79_6025-500x346.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/212\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/09\/101glee_sc-79_6025-500x346-thumb-400x276-18187.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0pt auto 20px\" height=\"276\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nI caught part of last night&#8217;s episode of &#8220;Glee,&#8221; which dealt (rather delicately) with the idea of religion.&nbsp; The plot swirled around a teenager who discovered the face of Jesus on a grilled cheese sandwich, and another kid, whose father was in critical condition in the hospital.&nbsp; Life, death, doubt, belief &#8212; it was all there, set against the backdrop of songs like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=if-UzXIQ5vw\">&#8220;Losing My Religion&#8221; <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QwCPAo5e_F8\">&#8220;Papa, Can You Hear Me?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What really hit me, though, was the final scene, which was strikingly Catholic: the teenager, Finn, finally ate the &#8220;Grilled Jesus&#8221; sandwich, to the strains of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B4CRkpBGQzU\">&#8220;What If God Was One of Us?&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d have to go back to &#8220;Mad Men,&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2008\/10\/Take-it--Break-it--Share-it--Love-it.html\">Peggy&#8217;s brilliant popsicle ad,<\/a> to find a more potent Eucharistic message on mainstream television.&nbsp; &nbsp; <br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\nSpeaking of &#8220;Glee&#8221; and faith: I&#8217;ve lately noticed another quirky phenomenon: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/tv\/2009\/12\/16\/2009-12-16_the_season_of_our_discontent_series_go_on_hiatus__glee_turns_to_gloom.html\">priests who love &#8220;Glee.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nFather Alexander Santora happened to catch the pilot of Fox&#8217;s &#8220;Glee&#8221; &#8211; and he was hooked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s ushering in something upbeat and vital even if it&#8217;s a little kooky,&#8221; says the New Jersey priest. &#8220;I even preached about it one Sunday, highlighting the importance of belonging to a group as a way to shape one&#8217;s self-esteem and identity.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m beginning to think there is a priest fan base for the show, beyond Fr. Santora. I&#8217;ve encountered priests who will chat amiably about &#8220;Glee&#8221; episodes on Facebook, or drop characters&#8217; names into polite dinner conversation. They seem to be full-fledged &#8220;Gleeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Could &#8220;Glee&#8221; end up being a tool in the New Evangelization?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t stop believin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> Others weighing in on the episode include <a href=\"http:\/\/googlinggod.com\/2010\/10\/06\/what-a-friend-we-have-in-cheesus\/\">Mike Hayes<\/a> (pro) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osvdailytake.com\/2010\/10\/this-glee-episode-really-was-loser.html\">Mary Poust<\/a> (con), which prompted <a href=\"http:\/\/googlinggod.com\/2010\/10\/07\/osv-blog-glee-lost-their-religion\/\">a respectful followup<\/a> by Mike the following day.  The Catholic League also couldn&#8217;t resist issuing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicleague.org\/release.php?id=1997\">a statement on the subject.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE II:<\/b> The hysteria has reached ear-splitting proportions.&nbsp;
