Last summer, I posted this item<\/a> about a remarkable order of African American nuns in Harlem.<\/p>\n

Late today, some sad news<\/a> about one of their members: <\/p>\n

\nAn elderly nun was killed after a minivan fleeing the police struck a Honda at an intersection in Harlem, sending the minivan over a curb and into three pedestrians Tuesday morning, according to witnesses and police officials.<\/p>\n

Wayne Harris, a 42-year-old salon owner, was sitting in his car at the corner of West 122nd Street and Lenox Avenue around 9:30 a.m. when he saw the blue Chrysler minivan barreling down Lenox Avenue southbound at a high speed. A black unmarked police car with lights flashing and sirens blaring followed about a block behind, he said.<\/p>\n

The minivan ran through a red light and collided with a Honda Odyssey. The blue minivan started spinning and hit two elderly women who were standing on a traffic island at Lenox and West 122nd, waiting to cross, he said.<\/p>\n

“It made a loud impact like an explosion,” Mr. Harris said.<\/p>\n

The nun was identified by the Archdiocese of New York as Sister Mary Celine Graham, 83, of the Franciscan Handmaids of Mary in Harlem; Sister Mary Celine had been a member of the order for about 50 years, according to members of the convent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
