{"id":453,"date":"2009-07-09T12:50:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-09T12:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/07\/obamas-gift-for-the-pope.html"},"modified":"2009-07-09T12:50:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-09T12:50:00","slug":"obamas-gift-for-the-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/07\/obamas-gift-for-the-pope.html","title":{"rendered":"Obama&#8217;s gift for the pope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What would you give the pope for a gift? <\/p>\n<p>President Obama has something picked out, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicreview.org\/subpages\/selectedstory.aspx?action=6515\">Catholic Review<\/a> of Baltimore: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> <a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SlYg_BBjc8I\/AAAAAAAAF38\/9J6O96oac_0\/s1600-h\/CNS-THURS-OBAMA.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;width: 285px;height: 250px\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SlYg_BBjc8I\/AAAAAAAAF38\/9J6O96oac_0\/s320\/CNS-THURS-OBAMA.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>During President Barack Obama\u2019s July 10 meeting with Pope Benedict XVI, he will present the pope with a stole that was placed on the remains of St. John Neumann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a delight that something of one of our Redemptorist saints would be given to our Holy Father,\u201d said Father Patrick Woods, provincial of the Redemptorists\u2019 Baltimore province, which is headquartered in Brooklyn, N.Y. \u201cWe\u2019re delighted as Americans that our president is visiting the Holy Father and delighted that something belonging to our province would be given to him.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Father Woods said in a statement that the stole was an appropriate gift because it symbolizes the priesthood that was \u201cat the heart of St. John Neumann\u2019s life as a Redemptorist.\u201d He also said the stole, placed on the saint who had worked extensively with immigrants, was symbolic of the new wave of immigration in the United States and the Redemptorists\u2019 continued service to these groups. <\/p>\n<p>A stole is a long, narrow strip of cloth, draped over the neck and falling to about the knees, worn by a priest or bishop when celebrating Mass or presiding at other liturgical ceremonies. <\/p>\n<p>Louis DiCocco, president of St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio, an architecture and design firm based in Pennsylvania that specializes in building and restoring churches, was instrumental in obtaining the stole for the president, according to the Redemptorists. <\/p>\n<p>His firm designed and built a chair used by Pope Benedict at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington during his visit in April 2008. <\/p>\n<p>DiCocco was approached by the Obama administration about a possible gift for the pope. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted to find an antique chalice, but I suggested it was important to get something more personable,\u201d DiCocco said in a statement. \u201cI told them about this stole that was something that belonged to an immigrant who was so instrumental in serving immigrants and building Catholic schools.
