{"id":4067,"date":"2010-02-19T03:35:39","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T03:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2010\/02\/father-may-face-jail-over-daughters-baptism.html"},"modified":"2010-02-19T03:35:39","modified_gmt":"2010-02-19T03:35:39","slug":"father-may-face-jail-over-daughters-baptism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2010\/02\/father-may-face-jail-over-daughters-baptism.html","title":{"rendered":"Father may face jail over daughter&#8217;s baptism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Windy City comes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nation-and-world\/la-na-divorce-religions19-2010feb19,0,3958664.story\">this story<\/a> of an ill wind blowing between a divorced couple, over religion and the raising of their daughter: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nRebecca Reyes opened an e-mail from her estranged husband last November to learn he&#8217;d had their 3-year-old daughter baptized in the Catholic Church &#8212; despite his pledge to raise her in the Jewish faith, she said.<\/p>\n<p>When she complained, a Cook County judge took the unusual step of temporarily barring Reyes&#8217; husband, Joseph, from exposing their child to any faith other than Judaism.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/wbbm1211jewishbaby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"wbbm1211jewishbaby.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/212\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/02\/wbbm1211jewishbaby-thumb-250x187-11648.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;float: left\" height=\"187\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/span>Joseph Reyes allegedly defied the order by taking his daughter to Mass, with a television news crew in tow.<\/p>\n<p>His wife&#8217;s lawyers blasted his defiance and demanded that he be held in criminal contempt.<\/p>\n<p>As the couple&#8217;s private battles flare into the open, the case has raised questions about how far the courts can &#8212; or should &#8212; go in dictating which religion parents teach their children.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Reyes, a law student, said he decided to take his daughter to a Catholic church despite the court order after she&#8217;d asked about her paternal grandparents. He told her they were at church, and she asked to go there, he said.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer, Joel Brodsky, said every parent has a right to take their child to their place of worship &#8220;as long as it is not a harm to the child.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I cannot see how taking a child to a baptism or church could ever be a harm to a child,&#8221; Brodsky said.<\/p>\n<p>Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Loredo-Rivera, who was brought into the case at the father&#8217;s request to replace Judge Edward Jordan, said Tuesday that she will set a date for trial on the contempt charge.
