{"id":38,"date":"2009-10-01T12:10:09","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T12:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/10\/vatican-rep-free-speech-is-not-an-obligation.html"},"modified":"2009-10-01T12:10:09","modified_gmt":"2009-10-01T12:10:09","slug":"vatican-rep-free-speech-is-not-an-obligation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/10\/vatican-rep-free-speech-is-not-an-obligation.html","title":{"rendered":"Vatican rep: free speech is not an obligation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/p>\n<div>We&#8217;re accustomed to defending all forms of free speech in this country. &nbsp;But a Vatican archbishop is drawing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/stories\/cns\/0904353.htm\">a line in the sand<\/a>: &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">While the freedom of expression is a right, states are not obliged to protect expression that incites hatred and tramples upon other people&#8217;s rights, a Vatican official said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The Vatican&#8217;s representative to U.N. agencies in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, said the freedom of expression should take into account the &#8220;principles of social ethics such as truth, solidarity, tolerance and fairness.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">These are principles that &#8220;form the cornerstone of justice, equity, respect for privacy and subsidiarity,&#8221; he said Sept. 30 at a U.N.
