{"id":3657,"date":"2009-11-11T17:52:12","date_gmt":"2009-11-11T17:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/11\/breaking-kidnapped-priest-freed.html"},"modified":"2009-11-11T17:52:12","modified_gmt":"2009-11-11T17:52:12","slug":"breaking-kidnapped-priest-freed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/11\/breaking-kidnapped-priest-freed.html","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Kidnapped priest freed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2009\/nov\/11\/kidnapped-priest-michael-sinnott-freed\">welcome news<\/a> from the Philippines: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAn elderly Irish priest kidnapped and held captive in the Philippines has been released, it has been revealed tonight.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed Fr Michael Sinnott has been freed.<\/p>\n<p>The missionary was abducted from his gated compound in Pagadian City on the island of Mindanao on October 11.<\/p>\n<p>Sinnott, 79, from Barntown in Co Wexford, has a serious heart condition and has been taken to a centre for a medical check-up.<\/p>\n<p>Irish foreign affairs minister Michael Martin said no ransom had been paid for the release of the priest, who is a member of the Missionaries of St Columban.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am personally delighted and relieved to relay the news that Fr Michael Sinnott has been freed by his captives and handed over to the Philippine authorities,&#8221; said Martin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The release of Fr Michael represents the successful conclusion of a major diplomatic effort by the Irish and Philippine governments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As in previous kidnaps, no ransom was paid by the Irish government.
