{"id":3551,"date":"2009-10-24T08:58:29","date_gmt":"2009-10-24T08:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2009\/10\/two-deacons-in-the-family.html"},"modified":"2009-10-24T08:58:29","modified_gmt":"2009-10-24T08:58:29","slug":"two-deacons-in-the-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2009\/10\/two-deacons-in-the-family.html","title":{"rendered":"Two deacons in the family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some things run in the family &#8212; like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicstarherald.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=3680:deacons-share-a-father-son-moment-during-ordination-ceremony-in-rome&amp;catid=102:latest-news\">religious vocations<\/a>:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For Deacon Mark Gallagher, the ordination of his<br \/>\nson, Charles, as a transitional deacon Oct. 8 in Rome was almost like<br \/>\nfather, like son.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mark Gallagher has been a permanent deacon since<br \/>\n1996, while Charles is on track to be ordained a priest for the<br \/>\nArchdiocese of Washington, D.C., next June.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a great blessing,&#8221; the elder Gallagher said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t be more thankful to God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Deacon Mark Gallagher has, since 2007, served as a permanent deacon at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Margate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ordained in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.,<br \/>\nin 1996, Deacon Mark two years ago retired from his job of 33 years,<br \/>\nworking in the government liaison office, as a lobbyist for for the<br \/>\npoor and unborn, for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.<br \/>\nHe and his wife, Kathy, retired to Ocean City, where he was able to<br \/>\ncontinue serving as a permanent deacon.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Growing up as the seventh of nine children in<br \/>\nAdelphi, Md., son Charles Gallagher, his parents recalled, loved<br \/>\nwatching and playing sports such as football, baseball and soccer, and<br \/>\nalso was an avid music lover.
