{"id":3338,"date":"2007-12-10T08:32:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-10T08:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2007\/12\/sister-act-nun-reads-curse-words-to-students.html"},"modified":"2007-12-10T08:32:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-10T08:32:00","slug":"sister-act-nun-reads-curse-words-to-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2007\/12\/sister-act-nun-reads-curse-words-to-students.html","title":{"rendered":"Sister act: nun reads curse words to students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like a lot of you out there, I was taught by nuns. <\/p>\n<p>But I never had one do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/newsflash\/michigan\/index.ssf?\/base\/news-49\/119721686285610.xml&amp;storylist=newsmichigan\">something like this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Sister Kathy Avery won&#8217;t put up with swearing on the playground at her school, and she&#8217;s not above repeating the offending language to make sure everyone understands which words she won&#8217;t tolerate.<\/p>\n<p>The principal of St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic School had students stay after a mass last month and informed the fifth- through eighth-graders that she has a zero-tolerance policy for cursing.<\/p>\n<p>Just in case anyone wasn&#8217;t sure what she was talking about, Avery read off a list of the very words and phrases that she was banning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It got a little quiet in church&#8221; during her talk, she told the Detroit Free Press.<\/p>\n<p>Some parents were shocked, but others applauded, the newspaper said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a way you would think a nun would shy away from something like that, but she&#8217;s very open with the children, very clear in her messages,&#8221; said Margaret Roache, chairperson of the school commission.<\/p>\n<p>Roache&#8217;s sixth-grade son was there when Avery read the list of banned words.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I asked him to give me a sample of it, he said &#8216;Oh, no, I can&#8217;t say it!'&#8221; Roache said. &#8220;I thought it was great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A representative of the Archdiocese of Detroit declined to comment Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Cuss words aren&#8217;t the only things that set Avery off. She&#8217;s also banned the words &#8220;stupid&#8221; and &#8220;boring.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Well, one word that no one will use to describe that particular class is &#8220;boring.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like a lot of you out there, I was taught by nuns.
