The USCCB has published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithfulcitizenship.org\/docs\/FC_Novena.pdf\">Novena for Faithful Citizenship<\/a>, designed to be prayed on the nine Tuesdays leading up to the election on November 4.<\/p>\n<p>Good old reliable <a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/\">Rocco<\/a> has posted part of the opening prayer, and it deserves our attention:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Immaculate Heart of Mary,<br \/>help us to conquer the menace of evil,<br \/>which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today,<br \/>and whose immeasurable effects<br \/>already weigh down upon our modern world<br \/>and seem to block the paths toward the future.<\/p>\n<p>From famine and war, deliver us.<br \/>From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us.<br \/>From sins against human life from its very beginning, deliver us.<br \/>From hatred and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God, deliver us.<br \/>From every kind of injustice in the life of society, both national and international, deliver us.<br \/>From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us.<br \/>From attempts to stifle in human hearts the very truth of God, deliver us.<br \/>From the loss of awareness of good and evil, deliver us.<br \/>From sins against the Holy Spirit, deliver us.<\/p>\n<p>Accept, O Mother of Christ,<br \/>this cry laden with the sufferings of all individual human beings,<br \/>laden with the sufferings of whole societies.<br \/>Help us with the power of the Holy Spirit conquer all sin:<br \/>individual sin and the \u201csin of the world,\u201d<br \/>sin in all its manifestations.<br \/>Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world<br \/>the infinite saving power of the redemption:<br \/>the power of merciful love.<br \/>May it put a stop to evil.<br \/>May it transform consciences.<br \/>May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope.<\/p>\n<p>Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;d like some spiritual distraction from the noise and nastiness of this election year&#8230;try this on for size.
