{"id":2884,"date":"2008-09-06T14:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-06T14:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2008\/09\/the-speaker-accepts-pelosi-to-meet-with-her-archbishop.html"},"modified":"2008-09-06T14:48:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-06T14:48:00","slug":"the-speaker-accepts-pelosi-to-meet-with-her-archbishop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2008\/09\/the-speaker-accepts-pelosi-to-meet-with-her-archbishop.html","title":{"rendered":"The Speaker accepts: Pelosi to meet with her archbishop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hours after San Francisco&#8217;s Archbishop published <a href=\"http:\/\/deacbench.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/niederauer-on-pelosi.html\">a letter<\/a>, inviting the most prominent member of his flock for a friendly chat about abortion, the Speaker of the House accepted.<\/p>\n<p>This, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/a-1572993%7EPelosi_OKs_talk_with_SF_bishop_on_church_teachings.html\">the AP<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>  <a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SMLR7B-J7OI\/AAAAAAAAC64\/ZIZA4rKu1kA\/s1600-h\/nancy_pelosi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer;cursor:hand\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/SMLR7B-J7OI\/AAAAAAAAC64\/ZIZA4rKu1kA\/s320\/nancy_pelosi.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, under fire from U.S. bishops for comments she made about abortion, accepted on Friday an invitation from the Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco for a private talk.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi said in a letter to Archbishop George Niederauer that she&#8217;d &#8220;welcome the opportunity for our personal conversation and to go beyond our earlier most cordial exchange about immigration and needs of the poor to Church teaching on other significant matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The proposed meeting stems from comments Pelosi made Aug. 24 on NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press.&#8221; The Democratic congresswoman defended her support for abortion by saying &#8220;doctors of the church&#8221; have not been able to define when life begins.<\/p>\n<p>She also cited the role of individual conscience. &#8220;God has given us, each of us, a free will and a responsibility to answer for our actions,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Niederauer, who extended the invitation in the Friday column of the archdiocesan newspaper, and other bishops say that the church from its earliest days has considered abortion evil.<\/p>\n<p>Niederauer said Pelosi&#8217;s remarks were in &#8220;serious conflict&#8221; with church teaching and it was his duty to explain clearly church teachings about faith and morals.<\/p>\n<p>Several U.S. bishops have condemned the remarks made by Pelosi, a Catholic school graduate who repeatedly has expressed pride in and love for her religious heritage.<\/p>\n<p>While Pelosi&#8217;s letter said she was interested in speaking about &#8220;church teaching on other significant matters,&#8221; it did not mention abortion specifically. Her spokesman has defended her comments, saying in a previous statement that the congresswoman &#8220;fully appreciates the sanctity of family.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Stay tuned.
