{"id":2753,"date":"2008-10-01T13:40:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T13:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2008\/10\/affairs-of-state-french-edition.html"},"modified":"2008-10-01T13:40:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-01T13:40:00","slug":"affairs-of-state-french-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2008\/10\/affairs-of-state-french-edition.html","title":{"rendered":"Affairs of state, French edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even as the world celebrates the feast of <a href=\"http:\/\/deacbench.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/little-flower.html\">one of France&#8217;s greatest saints<\/a>, the country known as the church&#8217;s &#8220;eldest daughter&#8221; is roiled in an embarassing <a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/from-french-desk.html\">diplomatic mess<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>From a French <a href=\"http:\/\/ttc.org\/200809291551.m8tfp2f21721.htm\">news service<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> France has settled on an envoy to represent Paris at the Vatican after the Holy See rejected a gay candidate, a French diplomatic source told AFP on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>    France had earlier decided against proposing author Denis Tillinac for the post because he is divorced, sources close to the dossier said.<\/p>\n<p>    Instead, Stanislas Lefebvre de Laboulaye, currently France&#8217;s ambassador to Moscow, is to take up the post, the diplomatic source said.<\/p>\n<p>    The Beirut-born Lefebvre de Laboulaye has represented France in Moscow since November 2006, following stints as ambassador to Madagascar and consul general in Jerusalem in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>    The last French ambassador to the Holy See, Bernard Kessedjian, died in December 2007.<\/p>\n<p>    The gay man whose candidacy to replace Kessedjian was rejected is a career diplomat who is in a civil union with his partner, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>    The Roman Catholic Church condemns both divorce and active homosexuality, and strongly opposes legal rights for gay couples.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even as the world celebrates the feast of one of France&#8217;s greatest saints, the country known as the church&#8217;s &#8220;eldest daughter&#8221; is roiled in an embarassing diplomatic mess.
