Biden Jr., who is Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>Many bishops urged Catholics to make opposition to abortion a priority when they voted last week. But exit polls showed that Obama won 54 percent of the Catholic vote.<br \/>ad_icon<\/p>\n<p>The Freedom of Choice Act is sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>Many abortion rights activists said they think Congress is unlikely to pass the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, during public sessions of their meeting Tuesday, bishops took turns rising to condemn the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago warned of &#8220;devastating consequences&#8221; to the Catholic health-care system if the act nullified conscience laws that allow providers and institutions to decline to perform abortion-related procedures. He said it could force the closure of all Catholic hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Auxiliary Bishop Robert Hermann of St. Louis said that &#8220;any one of us would consider it a privilege to die tomorrow &#8212; to die tomorrow &#8212; to bring about the end of abortion.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Stay tuned.
