They are in our families and parishes, and we need to encourage and respond positively to their searching and discernment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Muhr gave the keynote speech at a workshop at Bethany Center titled \u201cVocations: A Response to Stewardship,\u201d hosted by the diocesan Vocations Enrichment Team. More than 20 parishes were represented.<\/p>\n<p>Citing a recent survey, Father Muhr noted three things that define youths\u2019 attitudes about serving the church:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 a strong feeling of connection with Pope John Paul II as an example of authenticity;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 vibrant youth movements, such as Life Teen, that focus on the Eucharist;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 desire to build a better church in response to the sexual abuse crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Families play a crucial role in vocations as they are often the first forum in which a young person will mention an interest in religious life, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we react when our children want to be a priest?\u201d he said. \u201cIt can be subtly negative: \u2018It\u2019s a lonely life,\u2019 or \u2018It\u2019s a sacrifice, but we support you.\u2019 If families\u2019 reaction were, \u2018Wow, that would be a great thing to do with your life,\u2019 then that puts a whole different spin on the idea and transfers positive messages. Kids pick up on our attitudes about religious life, so it\u2019s something we need to reflect on.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  There&#8217;s more, so check out the link.
