<\/a>A Catholic church is allowing worshippers to light candles in memory of their loved ones over the internet as it seeks to reach out to a broader community.<\/p>\n

The church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis di Ostia, 20 miles from the Vatican offers the novel scheme through its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Father Don Ludovico Barbangelo, the church\u2019s priest, said that his idea was \u201cwell received by the faithful\u201d, and is \u201ca little gesture that helps lots of people\u201d, particularly \u201cthose further away from the church\u201d and \u201cthe people who can\u2019t come to mass or those who want to maintain constant contact with us, given that the church isn\u2019t open 24 hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scheme has so far proved popular: nearly 700 candles have been \u201clit\u201d, including one dedicated to victims of this year\u2019s Abruzzo earthquake and another to a missing person.<\/p>\n

However the church believes it can expand his virtual worship still further. \u201cWe\u2019ve also downloaded some videos of masses. As for worship by video streaming, we\u2019re thinking about it\u2026 we\u2019ll see,\u201d Fr Barbangelo told the Ansa news agency. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
