<\/a> If you\u2019re still feeling drowsy this Sunday morning, here\u2019s something to wake you up. <\/p>\n

Last year, the world got a lot richer. <\/p>\n

According to the World Wealth Report, compiled by Merrill Lynch, the combined wealth of the world\u2019s richest people climbed 11 percent \u2026 to a grand total of 37.2 trillion dollars. <\/p>\n

The way it breaks down, about nine million people control about a quarter of the world\u2019s total wealth. <\/p>\n

Looked at another way: if they split the money evenly among themselves, those nine million people could afford about 7,000 new iPhones. Each. <\/p>\n

According to the report, the \u201csuper rich,\u201d with assets exceeding $30 million, number just over 94,000 people. <\/p>\n

I\u2019d just like to say: if any of those 94,000 people is here this morning \u2026 our pastor would like a word with you. <\/p>\n

Those are, by any measure, astonishing numbers. But let\u2019s be honest. They are the kinds of numbers most of us aspire to. Who wants to be a millionaire? Well, who doesn\u2019t? We live in a culture of having, owning, compounding, building up, adding on, enhancing, and expanding. The more you have, the more you have to get. And the more you get, the more you have to have. <\/p>\n

Or so we are led to believe. <\/p>\n

But in the middle of all this, while running toward that goal\u2026we run up against the word of God. <\/p>\n

As we continue through Ordinary Time right now, in Luke\u2019s gospel, we are encountering a series of readings that turn all our expectations and desires upside down. <\/p>\n

Last week, Jesus told one follower not to say goodbye to his family, and told another not to attend a funeral. \u201cLet the dead bury the dead,\u201d he told him. <\/p>\n

In a sneak preview, I can tell you that NEXT week, we have the story of the Good Samaritan \u2013 when Jesus tells us we must love and care for those we don\u2019t know, even those we may feel are alien to us. <\/p>\n

And this week, he tells his followers, as they head into the world, to take nothing with them \u2013 \u201cno money bag, no sack, no sandals.\u201d I\u2019m sending you like lambs among wolves, he says. <\/p>\n

Throughout this series of gospel readings, the followers of Christ are cautioned, again and again, not to get\u2026but to give. <\/p>\n

Not to save up\u2026but to surrender. <\/p>\n

Not to load up\u2026but to let go. <\/p>\n

Christ\u2019s continuing message is one of detachment. Or, in a popular phrase of the recovery movement: to let go, and let God. <\/p>\n

But today, when we hear Jesus send his followers into the world, they are not sent completely empty-handed. They go bearing one simple message. \u201cPeace.\u201d Jesus tells them: \u201cInto whatever household you enter, first say, \u2018Peace to this household.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

Peace. <\/p>\n

It is the first word he will say to them after the resurrection, when he appears in the upper room. And it is the great message he is asking them \u2013 and asking us \u2013 to carry into the world. Carry no sack, no money, no sandals. Carry, instead, peace. It is his first word to those who wish to believe. <\/p>\n

Two thousand years later, I\u2019m not sure we\u2019ve done a very good job of spreading that word. <\/p>\n

Whatever else there may be in the world in 2007, there is very little peace. And I\u2019m not speaking only of the absence of war \u2013 though God knows, we don\u2019t lack for wars. <\/p>\n

They are also the thousands of small conflicts that erupt in our daily lives. <\/p>\n

Between husbands and wives. <\/p>\n

Between parents and children. <\/p>\n

Between neighbors. Between co-workers. Even between strangers on the street. <\/p>\n

I can tell you, some of the fiercest battles I\u2019ve seen are waged in cars at the intersection of Yellowstone Boulevard and Queens Boulevard. <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably seen a few yourself, just out in our parking lot. <\/p>\n

And then there are the intense skirmishes that break out around the kitchen table, or behind the bedroom door. Battles that leave invisible but lasting scars. <\/p>\n

The sad fact remains that each of us has in our arsenals our own weapons of mass destruction. <\/p>\n

The cruel word. The hard look. The cold silence. <\/p>\n

But how often do we put those aside and say to people in our lives: \u201cPeace\u201d? <\/p>\n

How often do we make peace our mission\u2026and our message? <\/p>\n

How often do we strive to be Christ to others? <\/p>\n

How often do we strive to see Christ in the faces of those we do not understand\u2026or those with whom we disagree? <\/p>\n

The writer Anthony de Mello tells the story of a man whose marriage was in trouble. He sought some advice from a spiritual master. The master told him, \u201cYou must learn to listen to your wife.\u201d The man took the advice to heart and returned several weeks later and said he\u2019d learned to listen to every word his wife was saying. The master smiled and said, \u201cGood. Now go home and listen to every word she isn\u2019t saying.\u201d <\/p>\n

I think if more of us did that \u2013 not just with our spouses, but with each other \u2013 it might be a beginning, a first step, toward making peace a reality. Because to listen THAT way means you don\u2019t have the last word. It means a kind of humility and attentiveness to one another that Christ asks of us. It is a way of going into the world with nothing. <\/p>\n

Because, in truth, the detachment that Jesus is demanding isn\u2019t just a detachment from things \u2013 though that\u2019s a start. It is a detachment from ourselves. It is separating from our own pride, our own ego, our own sense of entitlement. It is taking with us nothing but what we are — stripped of what we pretend to be, divested of what we own, all that we use to impress people. It is putting that aside and carrying forth just one message, in Christ\u2019s name: peace. <\/p>\n

The day we can live that spirit and give it joyfully to others, we may not have a sack or money or sandals. We may not have enough money to buy 7,000 iPhones. <\/p>\n

But we will be wealthy beyond measure. <\/p>\n

And the world will indeed be richer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
