{"id":1403,"date":"2008-11-30T00:10:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-30T00:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/deaconsbench\/2008\/11\/any-camels.html"},"modified":"2008-11-30T00:10:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-30T00:10:00","slug":"any-camels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/deaconsbench\/2008\/11\/any-camels.html","title":{"rendered":"Any camels?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not even December (barely) and I have been avoiding digging out the Christmas decorations, but that hasn&#8217;t stopped some hardy souls in Ohio, who are getting into the spirit with some novel views of the Nativity.  <\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/new.php?n=14456\">CNA<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> A Catholic university in Dayton, Ohio is displaying a unique Nativity scene complete with wise men, shepherds, the town butcher and even government spies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/STH_Rh4rbpI\/AAAAAAAADZw\/ejn_kOqzik4\/s1600-h\/ppczechnativity.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;width: 250px;height: 181px\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_0DySLTT4PWo\/STH_Rh4rbpI\/AAAAAAAADZw\/ejn_kOqzik4\/s320\/ppczechnativity.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The University of Dayton has announced that its annual display of cr\u00e8ches\u2014which this year contains 30 different scenes\u2014will showcase a huge 130-piece village from Czechoslovakia dating from the 1850s.<\/p>\n<p>Father Johann Roten, S.M., director of the International Marian Research Institute and an expert on Nativity displays, explained the origins of the Czechoslovakian centerpiece, including the mysterious spies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government forbid people from having these scenes in their homes,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So because chimney sweeps could get into everyone&#8217;s homes to clean chimneys, the sweeps were recruited to look inside the homes for hidden scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Including the sweeps in the scene was really a political-religious statement about the government,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Since acquiring the set earlier this year, Fr. Roten related that volunteers have worked many hours cleaning and restoring the figures and buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Fr. Roten also spoke about the significance of the \u201cstrong bond between culture and religion,\u201d that can be found in Nativity scenes.
