<\/a>This is \u201cGaudete Sunday,\u201d and \u201cgaudete\u201d means \u201crejoice.\u201d In fact, that word recurs again and again in this Sunday\u2019s scriptures. We don these bright vestments and we exult, because the Incarnation is so close. <\/p>\n

But if you scan the headlines, there\u2019s not much cause for rejoicing. <\/p>\n

It was reported last week that if the big three automakers go out of business, it could affect one out of every 10 Americans. That sounds incredible. But I remember a conversation I had over the summer with a vice president at CBS News. It shows you the economic crisis in microcosm. <\/p>\n

She told me that the three biggest advertisers on CBS were drug companies, car companies and banks. And all three were cutting back their advertising. <\/p>\n

Friday, I heard that CBS News just laid off 70 people. The week before, another big media company, NPR, laid off more than 60. <\/p>\n

And the ripples are going out around the country, to newspapers, magazines. To all the companies that support THEM. The truck drivers who deliver the papers. The coffee shops that feed the staffs. I imagine, in Detroit this weekend, and in a lot of other cities, there are novenas being prayed, and candles being lit, by workers in restaurants and real estate offices and banks. Not to mention those who labor in the factories, and the sales offices, and the dealerships. <\/p>\n

And then there all those who are watching their retirement funds evaporate. As a friend of mine put it: \u201cMy 401(k) has turned into a 201(k).\u201d <\/p>\n

This Advent many of us are waiting with an expectation and an anxiety that we have not known for a long time. And right about now, rejoicing doesn\u2019t come easily. <\/p>\n

But Paul tells us in the second reading, very simply:<\/p>\n

\u201cRejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks.\u201d <\/p>\n

In all circumstances. <\/p>\n

Even these. <\/p>\n

Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported on a parish that had gone through some very hard times. <\/p>\n

It \u2018s the poorest parish in southern California \u2013 in fact, one of the poorest in the entire state: Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Mecca, California. Two years ago, the average income in Mecca was just $6,000. 60% of the people live below the poverty line. <\/p>\n

The congregation is made up largely of Latino farm workers who live in trailer parks. <\/p>\n

They own almost nothing. <\/p>\n

But they do have something beyond price. <\/p>\n

They have faith. <\/p>\n

They pray passionately to Our Lady. You will see them enter church and get down on their knees and \u2013 on their knees \u2013 crawl toward the altar to bring their petitions to God. The church is their guardian, and their hope. <\/p>\n

But a couple of years ago, the old church where they worshipped was beginning to fall apart. For a while, they went to mass in a huge tent, but people were collapsing in 120-degree heat. They needed a new church, desperately. So the pastor, Fr. Lucas, launched an ambitious fundraising campaign \u2013 trusting and praying that somehow the money would eventually arrive. He traveled to other parishes, and stories about his struggling church appeared on the Internet and were carried around the country. <\/p>\n

The faithful responded. <\/p>\n

People in Mecca began giving him crumpled envelopes \u2013 some with just a dollar or two. One woman arrived at church with a bag of dates. \u201cFr. Lucas,\u201d she said, \u201cI have no money. Sell these dates and use the money to build a church.\u201d And he took them, gratefully.<\/p>\n

Families in the trailer parks began giving whatever they could spare \u2013 five, ten, twenty dollars. The fund grew. A reporter asked one woman why they sacrificed so much. She put it so beautifully. \u201cIf you give away more,\u201d she explained, \u201cyou receive more back.\u201d <\/p>\n

Those who couldn\u2019t work donated time. They sold tacos, ran garage sales and hosted fiestas to raise money. <\/p>\n

<\/a> After two years, the parish ended up collecting $300,000. Special collections were taken up in neighboring parishes. The Diocese of San Bernardino chipped in some more. And the people of Our Lady of Guadalupe finally, incredibly, raised enough to build themselves a new church. It is temporary, made of Kevlar stretched over aluminum, but it will last a few years, until a more permanent structure can be built. It was dedicated a few weeks ago. <\/p>\n

Reading about that, I was reminded of all the churches we see in Brooklyn and Queens that were built by poor immigrants at the turn of the last century. All those families from Ireland and Italy and Germany and Poland, who came here with nothing.<\/p>\n

Nothing but faith. <\/p>\n

And now it is happening again. <\/p>\n

My friends, that alone is reason enough to rejoice on this Sunday of rejoicing. The miracle of faith is alive, and thriving. The struggles we have today are nothing compared to what the Thessalonians underwent. And to them, Paul was so hopeful. <\/p>\n

\u201cRejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances, give thanks.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n

The Incarnation, that blessed moment when God entered in human history, is about to be commemorated, and celebrated. <\/p>\n

But that event lives on in those farm workers in California. <\/p>\n

They are living the Incarnation, and witnessing to it. The Christ whose coming we celebrate in 11 days is celebrated every day, in countless hearts like those in Mecca California. <\/p>\n

He is living in soup kitchens in Manhattan\u2026in shelters in Miami\u2026in hospices in Chicago. He is living in all people of faith, and hope, and love. This is what Christ\u2019s coming was about. And he continues to come, in every outpouring of love, in every sacrifice that is made, in every Eucharist that is offered. <\/p>\n

None of us can know what the future will bring. But we prepare to celebrate a gift from the past, God\u2019s gift of His son. And the gift lives on. <\/p>\n

So: for what the gift brought\u2026rejoice always! <\/p>\n

For what it brings to the world\u2026pray without ceasing!<\/p>\n

And for what we have and for what we will receive — in all circumstances — let us give thanks!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
