The economic news<\/a> this morning went from grim to grimmer, with unemployment hitting a 16-year high. Yesterday, the Concord Pastor offered this timely prayer<\/a> for a friend who had just lost his job. It concludes with the soulful words of Julian of Norwich, words that have given me hope during trying times: <\/p>\n

\n

O God,<\/span>
every good gift comes from your hand<\/span>
and you have been generous to so many<\/span>
in so many ways…<\/span><\/p>\n

But the times are changing<\/span>
and things we have taken for granted<\/span>
are slipping from our hands and beyond our reach…<\/span><\/p>\n

As the economy falters<\/span>
keep our stride firm and strong<\/span>
even when the familiar path<\/span>
slips from beneath our step…<\/span><\/p>\n

Renew our trust in your care for us<\/span>
and in the help that we can offer each other…<\/span><\/p>\n

Help us to know the things we truly need,<\/span>
to let go the things we only want<\/span>
and to know the difference between the two…<\/span><\/p>\n

As we let go the extra things, the frills and frolics,<\/span>
teach us to love the simpler things<\/span>
and especially the simple joys<\/span>
that bring us together…<\/span><\/p>\n

Help us to accept what we have lost<\/span>
and give us the strength to look again<\/span>
for work and for hope…<\/span><\/p>\n

Make us quick to help our neighbor<\/span>
and to accept our neighbor’s help…<\/span><\/p>\n

Give us the grace of a new beginning<\/span>
even when we’re not sure<\/span>
where or how to begin…<\/span><\/p>\n

Renew our desire to be close to you<\/span>
and refresh a spirit of prayer within us…<\/span><\/p>\n

Hear us when we cry out to you<\/span>
and give us confidence<\/span>
that you hear our every prayer…<\/span><\/p>\n

Help us to trust in you, O God,<\/span>
“that all shall be well,<\/span>
and that all shall be well,<\/span>
and that all manner of things shall be well…”<\/span><\/p>\n
