in her book, THE ARTIST UNIQUE, encourages everyone with the impulse to create to REACH.\u00a0 Reach beyond their comfort zone. Reach beyond what they know or think they know…and explore what MIGHT BE.\u00a0 That is an impulse that has motivated artists through the centuries.\u00a0 Picasso was famously quoted expressing that if he knew what a thing was going to be before he made it, why would he bother making it?<\/p>\n

A good question.\u00a0 Inspired by Carmen’s book…I wondered about creating a POD of artists willing to press their comfort zones.\u00a0 I asked Carmen if she’d like a small group of professional artists to use her book as an inspiration to create.\u00a0 But!\u00a0 (you may object) YOU are professionals.\u00a0 Art is easy for you.\u00a0 Ha!\u00a0 A misconception if I ever heard one!\u00a0 Art.\u00a0 Making art.\u00a0 Creating.\u00a0 It takes courage to step into any mystery and muster the courage to discover a new thing or behave in a new way.\u00a0 Art is no exception.\u00a0 And being a professional artist just sometimes makes it harder because the bar for something “looking good” is raised.<\/p>\n

A small band of courageous souls:\u00a0 Carmen, herself.\u00a0 Me.\u00a0 Liz Kalloch.\u00a0 Christine Mason Miller.\u00a0 Christen Olivarez.\u00a0 We all said yes to picking a method or artistic expression with which we were little familiar.\u00a0 Or not familiar at all.\u00a0 Explore it.\u00a0 Create something…and give it away.\u00a0 That was the structure.<\/p>\n

Carmen’s book is a buffet table of\u00a0 yummy artistic options. I picked the one that I’ve resisted all my life. The expression that made me most uncomfortable and the one I had the least experience with.\u00a0 Dimensional work: Polymer Clay.\u00a0 I didn’t even have any.\u00a0 I had none of the tools. This was a fresh effort and the first foray into it was dismal.\u00a0 So clunky I was reluctant to take a photo of it.\u00a0 Ah.\u00a0 But I did.\u00a0 Because documenting failures along the path is an excellent way to imprint the truth that Edison freely shared: there are no failures, just a bunch of ways that lead to a solution.<\/p>\n

If you were to pick something about which you have an interest or curiosity but no demonstrated skill or talent: what would it be?\u00a0 Featured today is one of Carmen’s lovely works.\u00a0 Pictured on Monday will be my first effort at understanding how to work with Polymer Clay.\u00a0 Reach!\u00a0 Reach a little today.<\/p>\n
