I recognize that I can tell
\nthe stories of my childhood
\nin ways that give wings to these days.<\/p>\n

It’s my story.<\/p>\n

I can tell it any way I want.<\/p>\n

My friend, Frankie Kiehl, told me repeatedly as she lay dying of pancreatic cancer, that she had
\none important message to leave with me.\u00a0 She said in many different ways that there is only
\none “storyteller” of my childhood: me.\u00a0 I Can Tell The Story any way that I want.<\/p>\n

I was put in a room, by myself, a lot.\u00a0 My parents were surprised by me and it turns out their
\nplans for a “second honeymoon”\u00a0 on their 25th wedding anniversary were cancelled because
\nthey had me, instead.\u00a0 I was their second honeymoon.\u00a0 With trumpets.\u00a0 And drums. And
\nlots of dancing.\u00a0 More dancing than they bargained for.\u00a0 So I got invited to a room, by
\nmyself, a lot.\u00a0 That could be a sad story.\u00a0\u00a0 But the wings on the story?\u00a0\u00a0 I was given the
\nopportunity, as a youngster, to learn to be entertained by my own thoughts.\u00a0 Those
\nexperiences prepared me for the somewhat solitary life of an author.\u00a0 Wow. Thanks, mom
\nand dad!\u00a0 And while they were at it, they instilled in me a lifelong love of books.\u00a0 Because
\nthere were always a stack of books in the room.\u00a0 And they were adult books, not books for
\n“children.”\u00a0 So that experience gifted me with an expansive vocabulary.\u00a0 And a love of
\ndictionaries.\u00a0 And encyclopedias.\u00a0 It’s been a mighty helpful interest.<\/p>\n
