I\u2019m rooted in the construct of Christianity.\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 My parents used it as reprieve and auto baby-sitter.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have to walk all the way around the block to show up in the appointed room for the specified event.\u00a0 I just climbed the fence that divided by back yard from the basement steps of the church.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been climbing that fence ever since.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not in a church building today.\u00a0 But I do recognize the significance of an empty tomb.\u00a0 Imagine.\u00a0 The guy you\u2019d given up everything you owned, believed, been taught…the guy
\nthat you suffered the disdain of your family (What do you MEAN you have a new family?) and the mocking of your friends (You are missing the huge buffet event AGAIN to feed the never-ending poor?\u00a0 Whadaya crazy?)…THAT guy.\u00a0 Just broke your heart by being killed, right before your very eyes.\u00a0 And now?\u00a0 You don\u2019t even get to mourn.\u00a0 The body\u2019s gone missing.<\/p>\n
That is how it is in a season of Spring.\u00a0 Of Renewal. Of Fresh Constructs.\u00a0 Of surprisingly empty tombs.\u00a0 You go along – living your days according to a mission\/model\/intention statement\/set of beliefs that have worked.\u00a0 Well.\u00a0 Well, pretty well. Then there are those inexplicable holes where you just try to jump over the stuff that makes no sense. Simply because it used to make sense.\u00a0\u00a0 You are hoping to soon get back to the \u201cthings making sense place.\u201d\u00a0 But you can\u2019t.\u00a0 What are you looking in there for?\u00a0 It\u2019s empty.\u00a0 That has risen.\u00a0 It has moved on.\u00a0 Without you.<\/p>\n
Spring is the growing season.\u00a0 The season of change.\u00a0 The season in which the seeds surprise you.\u00a0 Sometimes really surprise you – as I just learned from my resident seed saving experts – you can plant a red pepper seed and get (viola!) a different kind of pepper all together.\u00a0 One of the many surprises of the season.<\/p>\n
I have never set aside my faith, my deep seated understanding of my beliefs.\u00a0 I have simply stopped walking around the block to enter the narthex, the sanctuary, the meeting room.\u00a0 I climb the fence.<\/p>\n
My understanding of spirit serves me as I serve the world.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t explain to anyone when I was a child when asked, \u201cHow\u2019d\u00a0 you get here so fast?\u201d\u00a0 That was between the backyard, the fence and me.\u00a0 Nor do I much explain when people ask me weekly what beliefs fuel my journey.\u00a0 That I show up and do what I do in the world is my most common answer to inquiries about the specifics of my belief system.\u00a0 To use another familiar metaphor\u00a0 – If you want to know what kind of tree it is, look at the fruit.\u00a0 But even there\u00a0 Spring has a surprise for you.\u00a0 The seed you think you plant may not be the fruit the tree ends of up yielding.<\/p>\n
So this Easter Day I yield to the new ways.\u00a0 The beginnings.\u00a0 The empty tomb of all the ways I used to work, know and be.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In practical terms, on this day, the tomb is empty because I myself am rising.\u00a0 Born again.\u00a0 Again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
