Longtime ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon is stepping away from television to focus on his health, admitting he ignored warning signs from doctors, friends, and family that he needed to slow down.<\/p>\n

The 67-year-old sports journalist announced Monday that he is taking an indefinite leave of absence from ESPN and ABC after struggling with “multiple health issues” in recent months.<\/p>\n

Wilbon, best known for co-hosting ESPN’s popular sports debate show “Pardon the Interruption” (PTI) alongside Tony Kornheiser, shared the news in an emotional social media statement.<\/p>\n

“This isn\u2019t retirement, but it is a trip to the injured list. Hopefully not an extended one,” Wilbon wrote.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that his health problems had been building for some time and that those closest to him had urged him to take a break long before his announcement.<\/p>\n

“Probably, I should have listened to medical professionals and people closest to me, yep Kornheiser included, who saw worrisome signs in recent years that suggested I take time away earlier. But I didn\u2019t.”<\/p>\n

Wilbon did not disclose the specific conditions behind his decision. However, he has previously spoken publicly about living with diabetes and experiencing complications from the disease.<\/p>\n

As his health struggles became more serious, Wilbon said one close friend offered a sobering assessment: “The bill has come due.”<\/p>\n

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition, Wilbon emphasized that he is not retiring and hopes to return to the show that has made him a familiar face to millions of sports fans.<\/p>\n

“I have no idea exactly how this part of my journey will wind up,” he admitted. “The goal is to come out of it feeling much better than I do now and ready to return to sparring with Tony.”<\/p>\n

His announcement comes just days after “Pardon the Interruption” celebrated its 25th anniversary on October 22. Since its debut in 2001, the show has become one of ESPN’s signature programs, earning three Sports Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

Before his television career, Wilbon spent decades as a respected sports columnist for The Washington Post. His contributions to sports journalism earned him the prestigious Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.<\/p>\n

Following his announcement, colleagues and fellow journalists shared an outpouring of support.<\/p>\n

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro assured Wilbon that the network stands behind him.<\/p>\n

“Michael and his family have ESPN\u2019s full support as he takes time away to focus on his health and well-being,” Pitaro said. “We are here for Michael every step of the way and look forward to welcoming him back whenever he is ready.”<\/p>\n

Fellow ESPN personality Scott Van Pelt also reflected on Wilbon’s influence, saying he hopes the encouragement from colleagues and fans will help lift his spirits.<\/p>\n

“I hope he sees the outpouring and allows it to land in a way that serves as fuel to feel a bit better,” Van Pelt said.<\/p>\n

For now, there is no timetable for Wilbon’s return. His announcement is a reminder that our health should never take a back seat to the demands of work, even when we love what we do.<\/p>\n
