Former U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse is facing the final chapter of his life with a message that has moved many Christians: death is not the end. In a deeply personal Ash Wednesday interview<\/a>, the 53-year-old Nebraska statesman and Christian thinker spoke through tears about the comfort he has found in the righteousness of Jesus Christ as he lives with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

“We’re all on the clock,” Sasse said, acknowledging the reality of his prognosis. But he added that knowing his time may be short has sharpened his understanding of the Gospel and stripped away illusions of self-sufficiency. Reflecting on his life before God, he spoke with stark humility: “Jesus did everything on the cross to fulfill the whole law. I fulfilled none of it. He fulfilled all of it.”<\/p>\n

The conversation, recorded with longtime friends and theologians Michael Horton and Dan Bryant, revealed a man whose suffering has deepened his faith rather than diminished it. Sasse described humanity’s fallen condition through the lens of scripture, referencing Genesis and Romans, and then turned to the hope of redemption in Christ. Overcome with emotion, he declared, “That’s not the end of the story. The end of the story is that the new Adam came from Heaven, laid down all of His prerogatives and came and swept us up.”<\/p>\n

Horton responded by pointing to the Apostle Paul’s teaching that present suffering cannot compare with the coming glory in Christ. For believers, he said, affliction\u2014however real\u2014will one day seem “light and momentary” in view of eternity. Sasse’s visible physical discomfort during the interview underscored the weight of that promise. Tumors around his spinal column have caused severe pain, he shared, yet the ordeal has also dismantled many of the ambitions and attachments he once prized.<\/p>\n

“It definitely shattered idols really fast,” he said. “Lots of dumb stuff that I cared too much about \u2026 seemed really pointless.” Even in the midst of agony, he recalled moments of prayerful clarity, remembering nights when pain drove him repeatedly into hot showers for relief. “What a blessing,” he said he prayed then, “that I’m saying, ‘Lord, come quickly, Maranatha.'”<\/p>\n

Sasse also drew encouragement from the late pastor Tim Keller, who likewise endured pancreatic cancer and once observed that he would never want to return to his pre-cancer prayer life. The comparison resonated deeply. Sasse said his illness has exposed how much of his identity had been tied to work and achievement rather than rest in God. Looking back, he expressed regret at not honoring the Sabbath more faithfully, telling his children that keeping the Lord’s Day is “a really good antidote” to idolatry.<\/p>\n

The father of three announced<\/a> his diagnosis publicly in December, calling it “a death sentence” and expressing love for his wife, Melissa, and pride in their children. Since then, his reflections have taken on the tone of a farewell testimony\u2014one rooted not in despair but in resurrection hope.<\/p>\n

For Christians watching his journey, Sasse’s tears have become a sermon of their own: a reminder that the Gospel’s promise stands firm even at the edge of death.
